What to See at General Santos City Fish Port Complex?

And just like that, August had drifted too fast away! It's already September once this blog is reviewed but it is 31st of August while I was writing this so it's a great feeling to be saying goodbye to a month which has given me relief and enjoyment. Relief in a sense that it has been two months after my operation anniversary and enjoyment because I was able to travel together with the family and everything went well.

Speaking of the family travel, I am here again to continue with what commenced during our three nights four days trip to Mindanao specifically in General Santos, South Cotabato and Koronadal City, oh, and Polomolok too! Oh, am so pumped right now to talk about our first destination - General Santos City Fish Port Complex!

Welcome to General Santos City Fish Port Complex

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Filled with vehicles both for land and sea, the numerous people chants and vehicle noise made me felt like I was at our local wet market back in Bohol. The familiar smell which reminded me of my late grandfather who was a fisherman himself came flashing into my mind as I hopped out of the taxi which sent us to General Santos City Fish Port Complex.

We came from the General Santos City Airport which was around 15 minutes drive away from the port complex via a cab because my brother in law was late in fetching us up. That, however, didn't stop us from moving on to our main agenda, to see huge tunas!

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

General Santos City Fish Port Complex is quite a long name but its name just suits well with what this complex is all about. General Santos City is dubbed as the Philippines' Tuna Capital, but more likely to be referred as Gensan, and Manny Pacquiao's home province. Yes, if someone talks about General Santos City, somehow at some point, I can see Manny Pacquaio in his boxing gloves with a sweaty and serious face ready to give a job to his opponent in a boxing ring. Indeed this man had given so much pride to this city and province overall that I also thought of availing his Manny Pacquiao  or PacmanTour but since we only got a short time in the city, we better thought of going somewhere more wallet-friendly.

What to See at General Santos City Fish Port Complex?

With our two hours stay within the port complex, I have seen quite enough action. There were so many things going on here and there but we missed our ultimate goal, however, it wasn't that unlucky after all as we found a 34 kilos local tuna!

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

But before I expand on that one, let me remind you that anyone who wants to come here has to wear boots, its definitely required and short pants are not allowed unless you got something underneath it like leggings. I had researched about it and was able to advise my family members to bring their own socks just to be sure not to get any contamination from wearing the boots.

There are also boots for rent inside the complex for Php 35, it can be used for the entire day. All of their boots are also properly sanitized so it was great to know that, in fact, we also saw their sanitizing elements outside the room where we rented them.

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Going back, here are the things in action that we saw while in the port complex. Note that this is a huge area thus we only roamed around a few sections but these are just the common sighting.

1. Friendly Workers

This huge complex employs about 8,000 workers! Most if not all of them are super friendly, they wear that genuine smile and utmost welcoming spirit to every visitor, especially to co-Filipinos which is why I am putting this on my number one list.

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

It was almost nine in the morning when we arrived, obviously, as per the person whom we rented the boots, there's a huge chance that we won't be able to see any gigantic tuna but still, we kept being positive that we will see one.

Right before we reached the sea vessel boats, a group of workers accommodated us telling that most tunas had been either packed for export or sent out to some tuna canning plantations within the city. They were a little sad to tell us that we should have come earlier. With a heavy heart, we thanked them but before leaving that part to move on to the wet marketplace, another worker who was pushing on a wooden cart called our attention, he had a tuna on his cart, it was a joy to see one that big.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

All of us were totally thankful that these workers did their best to accommodate us and it was already fine with us to see a 34-kilogram tuna!

2. Different Types of Tuna

If you aren't aware just yet, General Santos City is one of the biggest export provider of tuna to Japan, the United States and the rest of Asia. Tuna are saltwater fish which has 15 species, here in this part of the country, Yellowfin, Longtail, Bullet and Skipjacktunas are the most common.

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Every morning, as fishermen start docking into the port, they also begin unloading heavy box containers of tuna. Most of them have been freshly caught while some are already iced to keep its freshness while fishermen stay in their boats for days, some would even stay for a month.

Life of a tuna fisherman isn't easy, most especially these days when the number of tuna catch start to become scarce due to several reasons. It is indeed a blessing when they catch one. Once they reach the port, the meat of the fish is tested right away to identify if this is for export or for the local market. A stevedore or longshoreman carries each fish on his shoulder, most of the time these fishes are bigger than the carrier, then being weighed.

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

To test the quality of the fish, a Sashibo or a long steel instrument is plunged into the fish, just right above its pectoral fin. The extracted meat will then be used to judge if this is for export or if it stays within the local market. Value price will obviously matter.

General Santos City Fish Port Complex also had been recognized by the Guinness World Records for the largest fish display consisting of 25,594.49 kilograms of Yellowfintuna on September 11, 2014.

3. Vessels, Boats, Ships, and Marketing of Marine Products

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Because this is a fish port, it is evident that you'll also find numerous fishing vessels, of different sizes and colors. Being in the port, everywhere you look, the fishing boats are all over the place. Some of them are just docking, some may perhaps be waiting for fishermen to board while some are just chilling.

But the action can be found at those boats which are just starting to unload their caught fishes other than tuna. These are also being sent to the wet market where these will be sent out to different parts of the country.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

Other marine products we found inside were squids, octopus, shells, different types of fishes, they were all in buckets and huge basins. Others are also dried ones like tuna meat and tuna jaw which are really popular in the province and even in the other parts of the country.

4. Souvenirs for Sale

The General Santos City Fish Port Complex also had brought thousands if not millions of visitors from different parts of the country and the world into the city just so they can witness this great catch of local fishermen.

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

So it is obvious that there's a huge market for souvenirs too! Within the port, souvenir items such as keychains, refrigerator magnets and shirts with prints. These items are just sold at a very affordable price so any visitor can surely get one for themselves. I had bought three sets of keychains, a few magnets which are in addition to our collection and a shirt for my brother.

I was also very thankful to the personnel who had let us stay in their air-conditioned office prior to leaving the complex. It really helped us rest while waiting for our vehicle.

Overall, even if we had missed some great tuna catch, we were still happy and quite contented with the learnings we earned at General Santos City Fish Port Complex.

Things to Do at Mariano's Blooming Agri-Tourism Park

With a full stomach and a chewing mouth, the entire family went forward from Tupi, a town in South Cotabato which has an abundant supply of fruits. It got an array of fruit stands ranging from Durian to Mangosteen and a lot more, those which usually are priced at a high value in Cebu. Of course, we had to stuff ourselves with these because we rarely get to eat these type of fruits.

On the way, my sister in law asked if I would like to go to a sunflower farm which we will be passing by on our way to Koronadal City. At first, I thought it would be the same sunflower garden offered in Cebu but since I am open to anything, I nodded. Next thing I knew, our driver had made a right turn towards the Mariano's Blooming Agri-tourism Park.

Today's blog is all about our side trip to a sunflower garden along Tupi, South Cotabato named Mariano's Blooming Agri-tourism Park and what are the things that can be done while visiting this garden?

Welcome to Mariano's Blooming Agri-tourism Park

My favorite Guyabano fruit trees stood tall as the vehicle gets into a huge area, I personally couldn't find where the entrance area was but as soon as the vehicle came to a stop, I got out and found myself some photographs subjects right away. Flowers, succulents, and cacti - these made me excited and somehow I thought of the succulent display at Tagbilaran's Lite Port Building.

Stopped shooting as the security halted my family members for almost going inside without a ticket. James and I were both at the succulent area so I hurriedly went to look for where the cashier was.

A young man called my attention, there were three other staffs, all female at the hut where the young cashier asked me how many are we. I paid the right amount with the excitement of going inside but we still had to wear their wristbands which signify that we had paid and are allowed to get in.

On my right was a greenhouse area, several garden soil beds with young juvenile plants lay, the workers were as well spotted planting or perhaps getting rid of weeds, I was not hundred percent sure what they were up to. But I noticed them and was also entertained by the patterns of the floor tiles, for me, they look like doodles and I seriously want to doodle at that moment.

Video credits: Jean Beltran  via bitLanders

After passing by several doodle tiles, plant shrubs and some gardening materials, we stopped by their aisle landscape but the skies started pouring and we had no other choice but to look for a shelter and here begins what I want to share as the things that can be done while inside the Mariano's Blooming Agri-tourism Park.

Pictorial at the Sunflower Fields

"Take photos or it didn't happen."

philippines_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

One reason why I would always take photographs during travel is for remembrance and so at this beautiful blooming farm park, it is very mandatory that any visitor would walk down towards their sunflower garden and do pictorials, we did!

It was raining and because we are sure the rain isn't going to stop, we braced ourselves and went walking into the wetland. The park provides free umbrellas too which was good.

So then upon arrival at their sunflower garden which was really nice and beautiful with plenty of these are wonderfully landscaped and cultured by their workers, it is evident why it has the name blooming for itself.

My brother even had a product photography right after their own too! Sunflowers are indeed pretty and very photogenic! Don't miss to do your own photoshoot when in the area!

Feed Sun Conure Parrot Birds

Loud, playful, active, spunky, feisty, intelligent, rowdy, fun, curious, comical, acrobatic, cuddly, nippy. These were just some of the characteristics of Sun Conure Parrots or also known as Sun Parakeets. Small in size but lovely in color. They live for 25 to 3- years and can be very sociable at times.

travel_philippines

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

My niece Aiesha was asking if she can get inside the cage where these birds were located, there were numerous of them inside and how can I refuse my niece? So, of course, both of us went inside, the fee was at Php 50 per person.

And as soon as we entered in, these cuties started asking for our attention. They went flying next to us, even landing on our heads especially my niece's who was really brave enough to hold feed seeds on her hand and so all of the parrots feasted on her palm. She, however, screamed a bit when she thought one of the birds bit her but it was just actually their feet.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

According to the caretaker, they are very trainable and can be very good at tricks. They were still young but are already used to seeing humans and interacting with them. Surprisingly, these birds have a good feel at kids so they just flock altogether near to my niece and started hopping around her, flying above and below as well as landing on her head. It was actually fun and to think that it only costs Php 50 is a good deal!

Dine in at their in-house Native Mirasol Café

sunflower_garden

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Aside from seeing flowers here and there, although some areas are still under development, one good reason why visitors can stay here for a full day is that they have their own restaurant cafe!

Mirasol Cafe offers different options such as TM Angus Steak to LGM's Fried Chicken and some Poqui Poqui which I am really curious what that's all about but aside from those mentioned, they also have garden salads which I believe all ingredients come from their own farm!

I was looking at their Facebook page and found a couple of photos posted which showed their food orders and I was definitely hungry while browsing. They also got seafood and pasta on their menu. Plus they are proud of their blue rice!

I regret that we didn't eat here, it would have been a good experience for sure especially that their interior design was also interesting. The photo posted here was just a preview from the outside which I took while I was looking for a shade when it started raining.

Join the Fruits Eat All You Can

Another thing that can be done here in Mariano's Blooming Agri-Tourism Park is joining their fruits eat all you can activity happening within this month!

travel_to_marianos_blooming_agri_tourism_park

Image credits: Mariano's Blooming Agri-Tourism Park Social Media

Their first Fruits eat all you can was a hit and so they had arranged another event that caters all fruit lovers and even those who aren't but are willing to try their fruits!

I would love to join the said event because it is very affordable! Imagine paying only Php 170 for all the fruits! It would have been a cool adventure to try each and every single one displayed at the table!

Things to note:

  • Entrance fee is priced at Php 50 while kids are half the price and senior citizens are also given discounts as long as they show their ID.
  • During weekends, the pricing increase to Php 70 for adults and Php 50 for kids. Note the difference!
  • It is important not to litter inside, there are trash cans around the farm.
  • Strictly no cutting, picking, removal, and destruction of any plant.
  • Eating is not allowed in the garden or plantation area, one can eat at their Mirasol Cafe
  • Stay on designated pathways and do not step on the crops!
  • Picnicking is only allowed in pavilions and designated areas.
  • No smoking, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes or similar devices permitted in the area!

How to Enjoy Lake Sebu, South Cotabato?

The tone of the final shutter echoed in our rented empty room of Greenstates Suites in Koronadal City or sectionally referred to as Marbel. Room rates here are quite affordable. The seven members of the family were able to occupy two attached rooms for less than Php 1700.

It was seven in the morning but we have to check out pretty advanced as we were on our way to the my most anticipated place while in South Cotabato - Lake Sebu.

philippines

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Today's blog, I would like to bestow with you the many ways on how you can appreciate as well as savor the great beauty of this blessed municipality of South Cotabato.

How to Enjoy Lake Sebu, South Cotabato?

It was all about rain in the first two days of being in Mindanao or rather in South Cotabato. We rested under a thundering Koronadal City yet we didn't let rain hinder us from pursuing what we had originally planned. It was a miracle that during the trip, the rain had halted and started again only when we were already in our room at the Sunrise Garden Lake Resort.

philippines_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Whilst the rain paused before lunchtime, all of us managed to head to some of the tourist spots that can be visited. The resort staffs were all accommodating and had called a group of Skylab drivers to lead us to our destinations. But I was all amazed by how these drivers who are local T'boli ones welcomed us to their land.

James and I were entertained by Kuya Mark Meyen, he is the current head of the Skylab drivers' association in Lake Sebu and who had directed us to their Tourist Destinations Information Bulletin located at their local terminal. Every tourist has to log their names for proper guest monitoring.

To fully enjoy Lake Sebu, there are three ways to do this as follows:

Emerge in their Magnificent Culture

lake_sebu

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

The T'bolis are very creative and artistic, they have several items that anyone can unquestionably be interested in. Also, these items reflect their lives and culture.

Bead Making which is becoming part of their income-generating activities most especially to the housewives and even the elder women in the municipality is one of these talked about creative works. These beads are then sold at the tourist spots such as the Seven Waterfalls and displayed, showcased or exhibited at museums!

I personally bought some beads for myself and my niece too because they are very affordable compared to those that are sold here in Cebu. I bought mine for only Php 35 per piece!

south_cotabato

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Brass Casting, on the other hand, is the act of which local men and even women would make bronze into brass belts, bells, and bracelets as well as anklets.

Wood Carving, I suppose most Filipinos are really into art because even in Mindanao, wood carving is also widely done. The T'bolis use indigenous materials that produce Hegelung which is a wooden two-stringed lute which T'bolis used as their principal musical instrument and other wooden pieces with specific indigenous designs.

travel_south_cotabato

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

To further see the T'boli culture in flesh, certain cultural performances are being performed on certain spots within the land. One was in the restaurants of Punta Isla Lake Resort while floating at the waters of Lake Sebu, some young performers go around each area to manifest their local instruments, dance their cultural choreography and even allow guests to take photos with them.

We personally encounter this and it was a very nice performance! I rarely see those types of dances but it brings me back to my grade school years. Indeed those dances aren't just a creation out of the imagination by our teachers but are really real ones danced by local T'bolis.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

T'boli Museum showcases more of the ancient remnants of those which were used in the ancient times of the T'boli tribe such as their instrumental equipment, their dresses, their house plans, the jewelry and accessories and even their house decorations! In this part of the tour, we have seen with our own eyes those of which had been centuries old. Included in the many items are also the weaved materials like clothing and household furnishing with those T'boli patterns.

Make note that the T'bolis are also referred to as the Dream Weavers!

Try Out the Exciting Adventure Activities

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

After discovering about their culture and immersing with their ancient items, let's move on to the exciting adventures that can be arranged whilst within Lake Sebu.

Ziplines can never be last in the list. At the seven waterfalls, the ziplines will allow the visitors to see the other five bodies of water because currently, only the first and second waterfalls are accessible.

There's no better way indeed to see them but through sliding through a line from the first waterfalls down to the second. The rush of air on your face and the view of the magnificent water rapids of each waterfall is surely worth all the fees!

lake_sebu_tourist_spots

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

And because Lake Sebu takes repletion in their bodies of water like the falls and of course the lakes, anywhere in the municipality, there are so many water activity opportunities such as Kayaking and Water Biking. They are also offered in certain resorts while in Lake Sebu, lake cruise is available.

tboli_tribe

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

SkylabRide is another matter that the locals here are gratified of. As most tourist destinations are hard to be traversed by foot, it is recommendable to either rent a vehicle. A van is the most comfortable but it is also great to experience a Skylab ride which literally means riding on a motorcycle with more than one back riders.

Other exciting activities are Bird Watching and Trekking!

Be Amazed at their Wonderful Nature

But the best thing about Lake Sebu is the fact that it got three beautiful lakes: Lake Sebu, Lake Seloton, and Lake Lahit. Each of which offers equal beauty!

south_cotabato_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

At each lake, there are diverse Lotus plants floating in the waters of each lake which coincidentally bloom every single morning, regardless if the sun rises or just hiding behind thick clouds. The best spot to go to witness them most especially in the morning is to check in at Sunrise Garden Lake Resort.

More wonderful nature that can be explored in their Seven Waterfalls, their springs, and rivers, cave and activities suggested like Spelunking.

tboli

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Deciding from these list of options may become overwhelming and most of the time, only a few pursuits can be performed in a day which is why staying in Lake Sebu requires more than a day or so so that a tourist or local visitor can definitely see and experience most if not all of their tourist destinations.

What A Family Can Do at Lake Sebu in Half a Day?

travel

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

With a very limited time of two days and one night, our plans for the first entire family trip was still fulfilled and I am more than happy about that. I would have minded the rain but it was something that we can't really avoid. It's inevitable most especially during these months where rain and storm would normally or better yet commonly visit the country. It's the rainy season after all!

The previous blogs had been a topic about Mindanao, its great tourist destinations most especially that of Lake Sebubut those previous blogs deal about the general things to do. Today, what I am going to talk about are the individual things or activities which we had done as a family and more details about it.

As a Family, What We Did at Lake Sebu?

philippines

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

It is way better if I would state these activities in order, from the time we arrived up to the end of our Lake Sebu adventure. It is true that traveling with a group of family is not easy, most especially if you have senior citizens and toddler with you. However, it seemed that we were able to manage to enjoy Lake Sebu as a whole family instead of being wary about expenses, travel time and more. True enough, if it was just the two of us, things would have been different, more tourist spots might have been visited but I didn't regret anything.

The family that travels together, stays together!

And just like how travel had made our relationship (James and I) stronger, this was also a good way for everyone in the family to become closer as well.

Here below are fun activities which can be done with the entire family. Whilst there are some which require strength, the elderly and younger ones, as well as the faint hearted, were not able to do such.

mindanao

1. Played Billiards and Other Games at Sunrise Garden Lake Resort

Sunrise Garden Lake Resort was the resort which we stayed during our two days and one night Lake Sebu exploration. The resort has a lot of amenities to try on and one which was very friendly to everyone was billiards. It was unfortunate that I forgot to take photographs, perhaps that was because I was enjoying the bonding that I forgot about it.

The rain was a decoy for us to also explore other things within the resort and it brought laughter most especially to my brothers and father. It has been a while since they had played the sport so it was a breath of fresh air to hold the cue stick and pretend to be a master of the game!

2. Skylab Riding

tourist_spots

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Habal-habal as how we refer to these motorcycle ride back in Bohol and Cebu. This is when a motorcycle is used for hire with two or more passengers in it.

The need to go to different spots within Lake Sebu forced us to take the Skylab ride because there was no other vehicle which could accommodate every one of us.

I was first concerned for my parents and the young ones but it looked like everyone had even enjoyed the ride! It even rained on our way back to the resort but nobody had complained about it.

3. Watch T'boli Danced at Punta Isla

philippines_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Punta Isla means the last island and there's a resort at Lake Sebu's last island called Punta Isla Lake Resort. It has an overlooking view of Lake Sebu and since the lake is the biggest and widest amongst the three in the municipality, it is the lake which gets a lot of attention for tourists.

They offer a lake cruise too but the best thing that we as a family found here was the T'boli Music and Dance presentation.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

We were waiting for our lunch to be served. It took some time for our orders to arrive but our boredom was taken away when four individuals hopped in the floating restaurant and began playing musical instruments and danced T'boli original steps.

Truly, I was entertained by the upbeat music with just bamboo instruments used and the dances which imitated certain bird or animal actions. I must mention the dancers' belts which added sound effects during their presentation!

4. Dined in and Ate Tilapia Local Dishes at Punta Isla in Lake Sebu's Floating Restaurant

lake_sebu

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Perhaps the very best way to experience the culture of a certain place is through food and that is also applicable there in Lake Sebu. Since the common livelihood is fishing in the lake, it is just understandable that their menu involves Tilapia fishes.

Pinausukang Tilapia, Kinilaw na Tilapia, Linagpang na Tilapia, Sinanglay na Tilapia just to name a few. But there are still a lot on the list, we only tried the ones mentioned. However, they are also not limited to that, they got chicken and other options.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

Dining at a floating restaurant isn't that much exciting compared to that of a cruise, however, we all enjoyed the manual boat ride from the mainland going to the floating restaurant.

Prices are a little high but still acceptable. I recommend trying out their Pinausukang Tilapia. Although they taste just like any other fish out there, it is still good to be able to taste something new to the palette.

5. Learned More About the T'boli Culture at the Local Museum

lake_sebu_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

I have talked about the things that can be seen within the local T'boli Museum and although it isn't that of a big house to accommodate a family of big members, I mean the flooring was made of bamboo and some wood which looked sturdy, there were areas where we almost got stuck in between those braces.

But the interesting part was really the rich culture stored inside this four-cornered room. The family had a very short time here but it was still memorable most especially when we tried some of their musical instruments. It would have been nice if we wore traditional costumes and try to dance at the banging sound of the gongs.

6. Felt the Zipline Rush at Lake Sebu's 7 Waterfalls

lake_sebu_tourist_spots

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Although not every one of the family was able to do this, it was still a great place to go to with the group. The first and second waterfalls were just accessible and so it is recommended for the family to have a photo opportunity at any of these falls.

But the highlight here was the zip line which was why four of the family members tried it and were all satisfied with the excitement and fun we all experience as we slid through the zip line overlooking the beautiful five waterfalls of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

The white waters dropping sent a visual illusion as if we were also about to drop but it was more of a fun experience that fear was immediately taken away as soon as the body weight and gravity pulled us to move.

7. Buy Souvenirs at 2nd Falls

travel_lake_sebu

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Of course, souvenirs will never be exempted when visiting a new spot such as Lake Sebu so it was a good bonding time to be looking at T'boli tribe items like native bags, but most were made of cloth. They also have shirts with prints about Lake Sebu plus the accessories like the bracelets made of beads and necklaces.

There were also keychains and refrigerator magnets available for a souvenir. Again, I took that opportunity to get myself a magnet with Lake Sebu printed on it. My mother, on the other hand, was able to get herself a new bag!

lake_sebu_attractions

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

I am hundred percent sure that if we had more time, we could have gone to more tourist spots in Lake Sebu, not to also mention that the rain was another hindrance to our happy trip.

Anyway, it was still nice and we all enjoyed it!

How Are Handcrafted Good Quality Guitars Made?

Guitars.

Those who play one plucks the strings or strums them, turns the keys and pegs to correct the guitar's tuning, the string vibrations are picked up by the electric pickups or perhaps if acoustic, the strums can possibly go into the soundhole and produces that beautiful sound of strings.

All over the world, guitars had been used widely for several reasons but the main purpose of this fretted musical instrument is for music. It produces music that can either be acoustic or electric. It got several variations among which any music and instrument lover can select to play from.

But not all guitars are good ones. There are really badly made ones and yet there are those which we can refer to as real quality ones. Today's blog is all about how a good guitar is made and this comes straight from someone who's family business is through guitar making.

Qualities of a Good Guitar

First and foremost, let me set a proper disclaimer here that I am not a guitar player, I know a few chords but won't pass to be referred to as a PRO in strumming the strings with my finger or a pick. But my husband James is a music lover, he learned to play the instrument as early as elementary days but still not going to be considered as another PRO. It takes a lot of practice and time to become one.

Anyway, that topic is not actually related to what we are going to learn today, I just stated that to set an expectation. All information here is provided by a colleague friend of James.

guitar

First, let's define how can we determine if a guitar is of good quality?

  1. Type of wood used and body construction

  2. The Hardware materials

  3. Workmanship

How Are Handcrafted Good Quality Guitars Made?

When was the last time you held a guitar? Or perhaps a Ukulele? Do you have an idea how much that instrument was? Did you ask the owner or the seller in case you were in a music shop or something?

Do you think that was around a hundred dollar? Or perhaps two hundred or three hundred dollars?

What if I tell you that there are far more expensive than that. See the images below:

Yep, those are real price tags and I know your eyes are now widely opened to the point where your eyeballs' gonna fall out but these are real prices and here are the reasons why they are priced that high.

1. Wood
2. Luthier
3. Hardware

Below further, we'll deal with each of these factors. Note that we are going to look at an acoustic guitar for this blog and this type of guitar has around six major parts, mainly: the Pickguard, the Soundhole, the Bridge, the Saddle, the Bridge Pins and lastly the Strap Buttons. Electric guitars have more parts than the acoustic ones.

Without further ado, let's deal with each factor starting with the Wood!

The Wood

This is the primary ingredient in making a guitar. The type of wood used matters a lot and will affect the sound of each acoustic sound. Some of the tonewoods used commonly: Mahogany, Maple, Sitka Spruce, Red Spruce, Brazilian Rosewood and Indian Rosewood then Koa. The list is based from the fender website.

In the Philippines specifically in Cebu's world-class guitar handcrafter, Ferangeli, they use Cocobolo, Acacia, Philippine Ebony, Philippine Mango wood, and a lot more.

But any type of wood has water in it, water, however, occupies space and has a mass, more importantly, water evaporates. So each single wood material has to be dried up enough for the wood to become solid. Drying up a wood takes time of course and care too which means days or weeks or even months. Imagine having to dry up the wood during the rainy season?

In order to note the moisture of the specific guitar wood used, the guitar handcrafter or maker has to use a wood moisture meter. When the meter states it has 10% or less water in it, then a wood is ready!

The Luthier

Cebu specifically in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan has been widely known as the home of world-class guitars. It has a flourishing guitar industry and that this craftsmanship has been passed on by Spanish friars who trained the Cebuano villagers during the Spanish era.

Making a guitar takes time, it takes also effort, love, and craftsmanship. It is not an easy task thus it matters a lot who's your guitar's luthier. This word basically means someone who makes the guitar or lute. And when you want the best, it means also handing down the task to the best luthier, one who had spent years or better yet their entire lives in perfecting their craft.

In Cebu, Ferangeli is one of the best players in terms of the guitar market in Cebu. The company is an active exporter of guitars, to different parts of the world such as California, Hawaii, Mexico and many more. Most of their guitars also are customized and are made for months to perfection!

Video credits: Aris Mape via YouTube

Bearing its original name as La Filipina Guitars in the 1900s, the family's third generation branched out to become Ferangeli Guitar Handcrafter. With top-notched experience and research plus development, the head luthier, Fernando “Andoy” Dagoc trained their local ukulele and guitar makers.

Ferangeli Guitar Handcrafter now focuses on making export quality instruments and aim to produce instruments with the best sound possible the wood can offer.

The Hardware

Lastly, a guitar can't be used with just the wood, the other parts have to be assembled and glued together to become a finished product.

The process includes book matching, strutting or the gluing part, side construction, neck, fingerboard, bridge and saddle attachment to the body then the finishing starts after which comes inserting the tuning machine and lastly the strings. All of these requires tender care and only a mere seasoned luthier can perfect the process which usually takes two to three months per guitar.

Video credits: CrankyZombie Productionsvia YouTube

On top of that, most if not all guitars have been laid out with capiz shells or abalone types as well as some Mother of Pearls.

With all those work done with finishing one guitar, you might think how much would that cost? Well, for Ferangeli, their entry-level acoustic guitar starts at Php 14,000. Customized ones start from Php 18,000. But they also offer a personal guitar or ukulele making workshops!

How Are DOLE Pineapples Produced From Farm to Table?

$

It's almost Christmas season! After September comes October, then just two months to go, the season for canned fruit cocktails, sweetened kinds of milk, spaghetti sauce packs, and pasta will start again. Most grocery stores will fill up their aisle with hundreds of tall stacks of different Christmas food essential items!

Diet won't be remembered during those times and even though most Filipinos would say that they don't have money, even the simplest household will surely have something on their table.

Speaking of food and desserts on the table, one of the most common in the Philippines is the fruit salad. Most would use canned ones for this and one popular brand is DOLE.

Welcome to DOLE Philippines Plantation!

Known for its different canned pineapple products such as the crushed, sliced, chunked and tidbits as well as their tropical fruit cocktail and a lot more! When we think of DOLE, we directly think of pineapple.

But they are not actually limited to just pineapple, they still have other products in the market too which don't have pineapples in them. All of their products are being distributed in the entire world market.

The company has given hundreds or thousands of jobs to the locals and even the neighboring citizens of Barangay Cannery Site, Polomolok, South Cotabato. It owns the largest pineapple plantation in the entire world with their 18,000 hectares of fields. This results in having the municipality of Polomolok as one of the richest municipalities in Mindanao because DOLE is their biggest taxpayer.

DOLE Pineapples from Farm to Grocery

During our visit to this wide plantation which has the beautiful Mount Matutum as a background, I had the chance to speak with the workers, those who were harvesting and also collecting the crowns which will be replanted.

I learned that there are stages in ensuring these pineapples are export quality.

1. At the Plantation Grounds

dole

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

It starts with good specimens of pineapples, split for propagation. The variety of these pineapples were studied and even experimented inside laboratories to ensure big produce and quality.

However, once they are transferred to the plantation, grown and harvested, these existing plants' crowns will be reuse and reexamined for planting again. They go back to the nursery and are prepared for planting again.

A planted pineapple shrub will bear fruit thrice a year, after that, they'll be taken out and be ground for compost which is also used for the plantation grounds.

2. Harvesting

pineapple_plantation

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

During the harvest, the hand picker workers stand in lines with a machine where they either manually put the fruits in an automatic conveyor belt, this is to ensure that they had harvested high quality produce.

Some fruits are left in the grounds because either they are too ripe or their sizes didn't pass the quality control.

The fruits will then be carried by trucks into the nearest packing shield. In the case of DOLE Philippines, the packing shield isn't too far from the plantation. In fact, we passed by it on our way to my sister in law's family house.

3. Packing

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

As soon as the pineapples reach the establishment, they are washed to take out any bugs or insects in it. Another set of washing is required to take out any residue.

Then the hand grading workers will then select the correct fruit for each market. There are also classes in terms of the size, shape, presentation, and color of the fruit. The workers will also attach the labels and place them in boxes.

4. Transportation

philippines_pineapple

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

After getting packed, the fruits will then be refrigerated and transported to a port where the DOLE refrigerated ships, this is to ensure that the fruits arrive at the clients in great shape and condition.

From there, the pineapples will then be distributed and placed in different marketplaces all over the world.

There's a lot of workloads just to provide pineapples in the entire world. It is very nice to know that they come from a local municipality here in the country.

A Sweet Pineapple Treat at DOLE Philippines Plantation

On our last day in Mindanao, the family's flight was still at quarter to one in the afternoon and so we still had time to check out the plantation which was just behind the house of my sister in law's family.

Without hesitation, the group went and walked to a concrete road with side fields full of pineapple plants! It was a great time to take drone shots indeed!

pineapple_factory

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Of course, we had to be polite and asked the workers if it is fine for us to take photos and roam around, they positively agree and even allowed us to take photographs of them!

But the best thing was that they gave us pineapple fruits which were part of their harvest, which means they are quality ones and was a candidate to be shipped abroad! In short, those fruits are not in the Philippine market at all.

One of the thing that I have noticed with this variety was the fact that my tongue didn't hurt after eating a few slices. The plant's sword-like leaves aren't spiky too so when the workers were walking by them, they were very safe.

dole_philippines

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

After eating two fruits, the workers were so accommodating that they even allowed us to bring some overripe ones which were left in the grounds. These fruits will be left to decompose so it was a blessing to have them for breakfast as dessert! Sweet and very rich in texture!

Almost all of the workers were very friendly, they were very polite in answering all my questions. The company also provided them with housing and there's even a specific area in Polomolok where the neighborhood all works for DOLE.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

The best treat, however, was that we learned something new, we had taken lots of photographs with Mt. Matutum at the background, even posed for several shots with pineapples in our hands like we were pineapple models.

After several overhead videos and after getting full from all the pineapples we have eaten, it was time to go back and prepare for our flight.

dole_plantation

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

The short yet educational tour to the DOLE pineapple plantation was very cool. I actually thought we will see pineapples in Bukidnon by October but thankfully, we had seen by our own eyes and even interacted with the plantation farmers and workers. It was a good day!

Sunrise Garden Lake Resort Full Review

review

Cloudy, windy with a combination of rain plus a bumpy ride. The four-wheel vehicle came into a stop as the road ahead of us was filled with water and mud dirt. The driver estimated the distance he had to allow for the vehicle not to get into the filth.

After a successful pass, we felt relieved to finally see a sign of the resort we had been looking forward to staying at Although a little hard to get to the sole resort in Lake Seloton, we finally made it to Sunrise Garden Lake Resort.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

I would like to talk about my own and personal experience at this resort during our stay in Lake Sebu municipality. This review will cover the following:

Overall Resort Ambiance
The Family Room
Staff and Service
Amenities Available
The Reservation Process and Pricing

Lake Seloton's Sole Resort

philippines

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

The municipality of Lake Sebu takes pride of their unique natural resources, three to mention are their three lakes, Lake Seloton, Lake Lahit and Lake Sebu which is the biggest and where the name of the municipality was derived. However, I have learned from a local T'boli that Lake Sebu is actually referred by the locals as El S'bu but since the outsiders call it as Lake Sebu, it was adopted instead of its original name.

But among the three lakes, its Lake Seloton which is the deepest which also means, it is the most abundant in terms of aquatic animals like Tilapia. It is the lake which has the most number of fish ponds too!

Within Lake Seloton, is a sole resort which has a pretty name. A name of which I like to witness, the Sunrise Garden Lake Resort. Allow me to share my own review about this resort.

Overall Resort Ambiance

philippines_destinations

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

If there's something which I love about the resort, it would be the lake view. The resort offers a great spot for taking photos at the lakeside where there were blooming lotus during the early morning. These pink lotus start to reveal their beauty as soon as the dawning light strikes.

Another thing that added beauty to it is the huge mountains which were a perfect background for the portraits. The water reflection was a plus as well as the local T'bolis who were in their paddle boats, they all added simple but very pretty view.

philippines_resorts

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

But that would be the best area in the resort, after which the other corners were just so-so, just like how those common resorts look, with concrete buildings facing the pool and the lake.

The Sunrise Garden Lake Resort had already built their second building for their other rooms. Aside from that, they also have their own resto bar and other huts for those who are just day users.

The Family Room

lake_sebu

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

A group of nine adults and three kids were assigned to a room named Aurora, this was the resort's air-conditioned family room. It was spacious enough, there were seven single beds and I requested to get an extra double bed so everyone can sleep comfortably.

It was air-conditioned and so it helped because we had kids with us. There's a personal comfort room too inside. The only issue was that it really smelled that I had to put a ripe pineapple just so it can help out with the bad smell which it did.

There was also a CRT television inside which was connected to a cable connection. I was glad that I was able to watch the women's volleyball game between the Philippines and Indonesia that Saturday night that we stayed there.

It was also facing the pool, however, we were on the second floor so it was giving us an overlooking view of the lake and the pool as well. It was also a good spot to have an early morning coffee while watching the sunrise.

Staffs and Service

sunrise_garden_lake_resort

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Although the comfort room's smell really turned me off when we arrived at our room, I was a totally happy camper because the staffs in the resort were helpful and accommodating. There were different times that they had shown that to us and let me enumerate them.

First was that we arrived really early on Saturday. We were like five hours ahead of our check-in time and when I asked them if we can have an early check in, they allowed it since there was no one inside the room.

The second time was that when we were looking for some vehicles which could take us to the Seven Waterfalls. They called the Skylab team and fetched us from the resort.

lake_sebu_south_cotabato

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

The third time was when we were on our way out of the resort. They again called some van for hire to fetch us from the resort to Koronadal City, our destination.

Aside from that, the resort staffs were also very friendly, they found ways to really build rapport. They even hoped that they can also come to Bohol or Cebu in the future.

Activities and Amenities

Video credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

At Sunrise Garden Lake Resort, there are many different things to do to entertain the guests. There are lake water activities, there are also billiards, live band every Saturday night and they got a pool too for kids and adults.

One of the interesting activity was the lake water bike. A guest can rent one unit and enjoy getting close to the lake since it doesn't require fuel, it is also environment-friendly plus its a good exercise too!

mindanao_resorts

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Another activity is their Tilapia fishing! Guests can go fishing and buy their catch at a lower rate then request it to either take home or have it cooked in the resort's own restaurant.

The live acoustic band every Saturday night was also interesting. Since we stayed on Saturday night, we watched him perform. He doesn't only have a good voice but was also a total performer, he could speak fine English with a good accent, he also can talk in Ilonggo, Bisaya, and Tagalog so he was able to communicate to his audience pretty well.

On top of that, they offer a boodle fight which was super affordable. It was also prepared at our own preferred time and spot within the resort, adjusted as per our request too because of the rain.

The Reservation Process and Pricing

sunrise_garden_lake_resort_review

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Finally, my favorite part of the review was the reservation and pricing. Out of all the resorts and hotels that I had been in contact to during the last few years, this was the easiest, most convenient reservation I had ever experienced.

From contacting the resort through Facebook, the response rate was fast and straight to the point. The reservation didn't really require any down payment at all! The family room which has seven single beds was good for Php 2000 but they allowed all nine of us to stay in the room with additional double extra beds!

Then the same was the case with our boodle fight. After I found out that they offer boodle fight, I requested that they arrange one for us. It was as well confirmed within Facebook Messenger, no down payment asked and just trusted our conversation. The family meal which was good for 8-10 pax was only Php 1699!

lake_sebu_resort

Image credits: Jean Beltran uploaded via bitLanders

Aside from the bad weather on the first day and the smelly comfort room, I had no other issue with the resort. I had fun and enjoyed the location too most especially the lake where the lotus flowers were blooming. Although sunrise didn't happen on the second day, it still shone upon us giving us good lighting for our family photo shoot. I highly recommend visiting here for those who are coming over to Lake Sebu, South Cotabato soon.

How Travel Can Nourish Your Relationship With Your Partner?

$

Video credits: vagabrothers via YouTube

Have you noticed that this generation has a lot of goals, financial goals, before reaching age 30 goals, there are even some fashion goals but the most common is the travel and relationship goals.

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

True enough, traveling is now a popular thing, may it be domestically or internationally, everyone talks about the new spot to check on and travel blogs or vlogs are both on top of the "in" thing these years. Also, travel fares are cheaper because of seat sales and other promos provided by several airlines, at least in the Philippines.

This blog, however, is a list of the positive effects of what travel can do to nourish your relationship with your partner, I am promoting this given that you are married to your partner because although it is still good to travel or go out together with their boyfriends or girlfriends, it is also subject to temptation, it is better to go out with a group if you are still not married to your loved one.

1. Better Decision Making

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

When my husband and I started traveling together, one of the things that we had to deal with was our decision making. It was tough and there were several times where we have to argue because of the results of our choices.

In traveling, decision making is one of the things that happens often. Every single side of the way, you'll meet something that you have to decide on, where to go next? Where to eat? What stuffs should we bring? Who's going to bring this and that? What specific area to take photos and so on.

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

It is fine to argue, it is normal and it is definitely a common reaction to such but when traveling, it is important to be reminded that you are only with your partner, no other person you know of lives in this place so it is better to just cut off the argument and decide between yourselves and just feel good with whatever the outcome might be.

2. Better Money Handling

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

The sad truth about traveling is that you need to shell out cash. True enough, every part of it needs cash, from the ticket to the hotel, even to the food and to get into several spots, there are entrance fees involve. When you go to the beach, there are boat rides and beach resorts that require charges, when you go to the mountain, money is still required.

Basically, money handling is important and it is one thing that as partners, you'll learn to improve on. Who should keep the allowance? Who should pay for the fare? Who should take note of every penny that was spent?

Video credits: Kristen & Siya via YouTube

Unless you are millionaires, then it is okay to spend and go out of your budget but if your funds are limited, then it is best to stick to your plans and spending budget. Eventually, if more travels permit in the future, it will help you as a couple to be good money spender and even budgeting becomes easy and efficient.

3. Perfect Time to Learn Each Other's Attitude

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

When you are just alone together, it is the perfect time to learn about each other's attitudes, that specific attitude which only emerges when rough things happen during travel such as delayed flights, issues with travel agencies and even running out of cash.

Surely, the not so good things will bring out some not so good behaviors from your partner or perhaps it might be you personally who would break out and would show those bad characters. No one's perfect so it is definitely human to reveal the tough characters but it is important to compose yourself, keep your cool and try to be extra patient.

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

It doesn't just end at learning each other's attitude, else, it should be about learning as well on how to train yourself not to give in to the bad mood. Sure there are bad days but it is just one bad day and the most important thing at the end of the day is your relationship.

If there's one thing that I have learned from my husband is that relationship is the most important thing, materials, and money, he can afford to lose but not the relationship.

4. Grow and Become Adults Together

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

One thing is very certain in life when you got older, you'll realize that you don't need a lot of friends, only a few but real ones. However, in certain cases where the real friends are not there when traveling, it is your partner who's supposed to be your best friend.

On the road, you will talk a lot, you'll learn from each other's stories and you'll find comfort in finding similarities and common denominators in each other. The things that you share together will make your relationship stronger, it will nourish the bond and definitely, you'll always look forward to traveling together.

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

Perhaps that's the reason why when we were starting with traveling, it became a thing that makes us look forward to the next. I would be a hypocrite if I'd say we had no more arguments, we still have some pity ones, but never had major issues anymore, we learned from all those arguments we had in the past and we definitely had learned to embrace each other's differences, making sure not to anymore do what we had done wrong in the past.

Today, when we are on the road, in a ship, in the air or even on the bus, we would cherish every issue we have, we try hard to learn from each other's mistakes, also to be extra careful with the choice of words when we get into some arguments or if ever we fight, we should always choose kindness and respect.

Conclusion

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

After all these years, I would still give credits to our travel experiences, our fights over the tickets, over restaurant choices, arguments over money matters, the small things, the big issues, and even the tiniest stuff, our relationship is strong because of all that had happened before as well as that which will happen in the future, in our future travels.

So to those couples who want to grow together, reach those travel and relationship goals, start saving, start planning and realize your dreams together, support each other and always choose love over arguments.

Image edited in Canva credits: Jean Beltran via Facebook

I am also sure that traveling is not applicable to all, there are couples who are not into this and that is fine as well. Find what's best for your relationship. The bottom line is that you should look for the best option to nourish your relationship, give time to each other, invest in blossoming your relationship with your life partner.

What to Do at Punta Isla Lake Resort?

$

There's a funny statement that says, "Calories don't count on the weekend." and so other states, "Don't mess up with someone who's hungry and angry."

Why am I stating this? Well, because we visited Punta Isla Lake Resortour of hunger. When our Skylab driver (habal-habal driver) asked us of where we would like to go for our Lake Sebu tour, we opted to go somewhere there's food for our lunch because all of us were already starving, like literally looking for food!

Fortunately, there are lots of restaurants around Lake Sebu however, the best place that the tour guide slash Skylab driver could refer us to was none other than Punta Isla Lake Resort.

Welcome to Punta Isla Lake Resort

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

At first, I thought this was just a restaurant, an eatery but I was already told by my sister in law that this has a floating restaurant available. The truth was that I was not anymore thinking of what the place could offer, as long as they have food, I thought I would be okay.

For T'bolis, Punta Isla means the far end island or basically the last island. As per our guide, the resort faces the biggest lake in Lake Sebu and is the last accessible part of the land which has direct access to the lake.

Because it is the sole resort facing the lake, it is also very popular with the locals and even those who are visiting the municipality. Most foreigners have taken this as one of their bucket list of places to go when in Lake Sebu and so we also did.

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Obviously, Punta Isla Lake Resort isn't just an eatery which offers river cruise, it is far more than that. It offers a lot of amenities and activities and just like Lake Seloton's Sunrise Garden Lake Resort, it also has an almost unlimited supply of Tilapia fishes given that it is the biggest lake in all the entire municipality.

What to Do at Punta Isla Lake Resort?

The entire family came here to dine in, but after getting our stomach filled with good Tilapia dishes, we explored the location and found out some of their offered amenities.

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

I have here a list of things to do to entertain you and of which had entertained us in a way while within the resort. It is evident though that most of these activities are also available in the other Lake Sebu resorts and that is primarily because they belong to one specific area.

1. River Cruise, Floating Restaurant and Open Cottages

Our number one mission was to eat at Punta Isla Lake Resort. Upon entering, our hungry spirits went directly to where the staff pointed us, the floating restaurants!

Since the resort is overlooking the lake, I got a little distracted seeing the view from above, it looks really peaceful, although the waters were a little busy because of the river cruise and floating restaurant giving ripples of water and disturbing its peaceful presence, it was evident that this water part is calm and has its own beauty.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

Upon learning that a river cruise would cost us more than the floating one, we thought we were fine with the latter. Although we could only see a glimpse of the wide lake, all we had in mind was the food that we will partake in a few.

But we saw numerous rounds of river cruise coming in and out of its docking port, we had river cruise experience beforehand also in Bohol so it was a reason that we could keep ourselves within that steady floating eatery. It wasn't bad at all because they have this self-service pull floating mini-boat which the kids love to take while waiting for our orders.

Aside from the floating restaurant and the river cruise, the resort also got several open cottages where guests can prefer to eat their lunch or dinner as well as brunch if that is applicable to the visitors here.

2. Watch and Learn From the T'boli Cultural Shows

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

A special cultural show is showcased too while inside those floating restaurants and open cottages. It is, in fact, a great experience to see in flesh the cultural music instruments, the dances, music, and songs as well as their traditional dresses.

Right before we were eating, I already heard some tribal or traditional music playing randomly at several instances in some part of the resort, I didn't mind it at first thinking it might be some standard music for the T'bolis and I was not wrong at all. That was indeed their traditional music which then was presented by four local T'bolis before our food was served.

I was already entertained by the traditional costume and their patterns, the sound of the brass metal castings in their belts and their headresses.

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

I personally learned about their musical instruments such as the Kubing, a Philippine Jew's harp of bamboo, the Sloli which is a flute made of again Bamboo and there's a unique bamboo one which produces bird-like sounds.

The cultural dances presented has those moves imitating animals but some of these dances were done only on rituals. We were lucky that they had given us a glimpse of this in a normal day. What really stuck in my head was the courtship dance where a woman would show her affection for the opposite gender. Watch the video below to know more of what I am pertaining here.

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

3. Taste Tilapia Specialty Dishes

Right as the food was served, the best activity to do here was to eat and treat the hungry stomachs with some pretty Tilapia specialty dishes. It was our first Tilapia treat and so tasting them was a little bit fun most especially those dishes which are not really familiar in Cebu or Bohol.

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

What I liked was their Chicharon Tilapia, the Lagpang na Tilapia, and even their Pinaputok na Tilapia. While they have a wide range of Tilapia dishes, they got other options too like chicken, pork and beef menu.

Prices here range from 200-250 per dish which is good for around 2-3 persons.

4. Souvenir Shopping

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

A few uphill walks were necessary for us to get back to the main resort after lunch, it was time to explore the resort. It was cool that we didn't have to pay any entrance fees though.

At their lounge area, there were several spots to get a good view of Lake Sebu. Included there were several souvenir items. Their traditional dresses are part of them, as well as the brass castings which T'bolis are known for. They also have items made of beads such as necklaces, wristbands, and bracelets as well as headdresses.

5. Owong Ride and Other Water Activities

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

An interesting thing to do in the waters of Lake Sebu was their water activities like learning to ride their traditional boats named Owong which doesn't have any outrigger. It looked very challenging, almost like kayaking except that their boat paddles are only a single one.

Aside from Owong, the got single kayak rides too as well as that one where more than two can maneuver.

Unfortunately, it was already late and raining when we were at the resort, it would also take us more time if we avail of those activities. Nonetheless, if any of you would be interested, make sure to inform their front desk about it.

6. Spend a Night at Their Accommodations

Image credits: Jean Beltran via Bitlanders Society Facebook

I know we went at Punta Isla Lake Resort with a very limited amount of time because of the weather but nonetheless, it was still great to see Lake Sebu's majestic beauty.

To those who would like to really explore the resort up to its tip, Punta Isla Lake Resort offers several accommodation options. They got fan rooms as well as air-conditioned ones. Rates range from Php 950 up to Php 3000 depending on the type of room and the number of heads staying.

As we were on our way out of the resort, I heard some of the local T'boli staffs said "Bud ye semfulek! Tey bong s'lamat!", which means visit us again! Thank you!

Cafe with Fast Internet Hunt in Tagbilaran City, Bohol

Working as a part-time for my company as well as working from home gave me the balance of life, I can still earn a living while being able to do whatever I wanted. I work only for three hours a day, so I have an ample amount of time to really watch online videos, entertain myself, enhance my writing skills, read a lot and even write more on my journal.

However, lately, I have been very busy because of my brother's arrival from the United Arab Emirates. Together with our family trip to Mindanao, I had been unable to do those personal activities plus I have somehow lost track of my daily routine, I kept on being lazy with writing and perhaps, my body was just readjusting back to the old routine. I am slowly coping up on that especially that I won't be able to travel this weekend due to the typhoon, all ships are not allowed to move out of the ports. It is a good move though although Cebu is a little far from the affected area. It is still good that they have preferred prevention.

So as for today's blog, I have thought about sharing my experience with hunting out a cafe in Tagbilaran City Bohol during one of my solo trips back home. I will soon create a separate blog listing some of the cafes that are good for those who are online workers like myself who need a place with a great internet connection while within Tagbilaran City. For now, let me share my own tiresome but a little funny experience with looking for the best cafe spot for online work.

Limited Time at Bo's Coffee

I didn't book a ticket on my way to Bohol. I knew within me that I might not be able to reach the port before seven in the morning, it was Friday and I thought there won't be many travelers at this hour. Due to traffic, I indeed missed the seven AM trip schedule, instead booked the next trip which was set to leave an hour after.

It was funny that I only missed the boat for five minutes. Anyway, it was all fine as I was able to slow down my pace, relaxed and very comfortable as I sat at the boarding area.

The entire trip was cool, I read a book by Vaneetha Rendall Risner entitled "The Scars That Have Shaped Me", a PDF file on my phone. I slept after crying a bit and without knowing, I was already in Tagbilaran City.

My mom and brother who were supposed to fetch me at the port had gone to their errands within the city and won't be able to fetch me anymore. And so I gladly went out and sought an internet cafe. Bo's Coffee was my number one option because of course, I had been there, I had tried their connection which was all fast and steady.

However, as I ordered my blended coffee and sat at my favorite spot but after an hour with an empty plastic cup (they didn't serve it in a cup), I was asked by some staff if I would like to extend my stay. I was like "what? You got some limit time?" and he nodded saying for the electricity use you can top up a few pesos!

It was a signal for me to leave. I know I didn't do any work yet and it was my first time to be told as such while in the past, I was there for more than three hours without paying additional cash. Anyway, I decided to leave.

Zero Internet Connection at Tablea de Maria Clara

As I opened the Bo's Coffee's glass door, I also used their internet connection to find out some other interesting cafes around Tagbilaran City. Tablea de Maria Clara sounded interesting thus I checked its social media pages as well as blog reviews about it.

Being content with the reviews, I turned my Google Maps direction assistant and called out a tricycle to get me there. It took around ten minutes from my location to arrive in Tablea de Maria Clara. It was just in front of the University of Bohol but located on the upper floor of the building. Slowly but surely, I stepped on each platform reaching the glass doors.

Airconditioning was off, I was a little sweaty as it was fifteen minutes after eleven. I was already hungry too but the ambiance looked really good. There were zero customers and I loved it. I thought I can have the entire place all to myself.

I went over the front desk, looked at their menu, ordered their best sellers and a full teapot to help me digest whatever I will be munching in a few minutes. I returned to my preferred seat, already anticipating to take photos of the area, they use wooden crates for their interiors though.

As I was done with paying my bill, I asked the staff for the WIFI password and things turned different afterward. She told me their router is damaged and is still being fixed so they don't have any internet connection at that moment. There I realized why they didn't have any customers around. I politely withdraw my order because I won't be able to work there and the staff was very courteous enough to return my money as well as allow me to take a couple of photos of the cafe.

I admit I was a little disappointed that they don't have any internet connection. I wish the next time that I visit them, they'll have perfect internet access by then.

Slow WIFI at Sweet Home Cafe

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

I checked my calendar, it wasn't Friday the 13th, I was just making sure these two instances aren't just because of the unlucky day. I had a data connection on my phone though so I was able to check my Google Maps again for any nearby cafe.

I found two, Fred's Book Cafe and Sweet Home Cafe. I preferred the latter because it sounded homier. I didn't bother checking out any reviews anymore. It was just seven minutes away but it was scorching hot, it was almost 12 noon and I had to walk, brave the hot sun, inside I told myself seven minutes is just a very near distance, I don't need to arrange a tricycle to bring me there.

tagbilaran_coffee_shops

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Sweat was all over my back, it was already blotting on my shirt. The airconditioning inside Sweet Home Cafe was such a relief. I put my backpack which was already becoming heavy, it only had my laptop inside and the charger.

I, of course, asked the front staff if they got internet access prior to ordering anything. She gladly gave me their WIFI code and I then ordered their Crunchy Chicken Sesame, a huge slice of their New York Chocolate Cake and a pot of tea to compliment the cake. The sweet slice was for my brother and mother though who were not able to finish the entire slice.

tagbilaran_city_cafe

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

As I was waiting for my meal, I realized that the WIFI connection wasn't that stable. I was really disappointed again, I was about to return back to the staff at the cashier area when I found a free WIFI network and was able to get connected!

Free and Fast Internet with Mang Inasal

Video credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders

It was surprising that I found the fast, reliable and very stable connection with Mang Inasal which was just next to Sweet Home Cafe. It was unexpected but it was all good for me to continue with my work.

Three hours after, the network was still fine, I finished my work, satisfied with it and I had to internally thank Mang Inasal for their fast free WIFI.

internet_coffee_shops

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

It's funny that I was able to settle down with this fast food chain instead rather than the more expensive cafes. Next time I go to Tagbilaran City and work online, I will go back to Mang Inasal instead, just kidding. Surely, I will check out the rest of the cafes around to find the best spot for online freelancers who might be visiting the city.

Life on a Backpack of a Minimalist Videographer and YouTuber

It's crazy knowing someone living such a way that his life doesn't depend on a lot of things. Today, I was introduced to Kraig Adams and I thought he is the perfect subject for a blog feature especially that it's been a while since I had shared someone else's life on writing. Who was the last one? I can't figure it out until I do my own scrolling on my blog list which I have no intention of doing as of the moment.

But just the thought of being a minimalist sounds a little scary but exciting at the same time, at least for me. I have reckoned I won't be able to live as such because I am overly attached to a lot of my stuff at home, talking about my journaling books, my pencils, pen collection and a bunch of books which I still have not read, plus I am overly excited about changing mattresses every now and then. But it is good to find someone who has not many but is completely okay and content with his lifestyle. By the way, this blog is about Kraig Adam's life as a Travel videographer and Youtuber.

Introducing Kraig Adams

According to his social media page, Kraig Adams is a nomad filmmaker, photographer, podcaster and minimalist. He is currently based in New York City and he was part of the team founding the online community Wedding Film School.

Twenty-seven years old as of this writing and he has a passion for minimalism. As per Kraig himself, minimalism is eliminating distractions to focus on what's truly important.

He started embracing minimalism for more than a year now and he had been successful so far with that, he gave away a lot of things on his shelf, sold some and while others worried about his situation after, he felt it was the best thing until he moved in with his girlfriend which is a different story now. He is still a minimalist but his house has obviously more stuff now compared before.

Although his minimalism strategies have declined at home, he still continued to be a minimalist while on the road. Because of his job as a travel videographer, he is always en route to somewhere. He had labeled himself as a nomad minimalist filmmaker, the description follows below.

What Does Nomad Means?

My ever reliable friend Mr. Wikipedia said a nomad is someone or people without fixed habitation. This means such is a member of a community of people who regularly move to and from the same areas, including nomadic hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads (owning livestock), and tinker or trader nomads. - wikipedia

I have a couple of friends who label themselves as nomad too. Most of them are freelancers who love traveling too where they go to different places, stay for a couple of weeks and then move to another interesting spot or province. Some may stay in the country while others prefer going to another country.

It feels good to see their feeds, experiencing a different culture and season and I thought it would be also a good thing to be in that kind of situation perhaps. But I am not sure if I will fit into that category. I always miss home and miss my own privacy too plus its quite a pain bringing with me my backpack most of the time.

What is Minimalism?

"Minimalism is eliminating distractions to focus on what's truly important."
- Kraig Adams

Video credits: Kraig Adams via YouTube

His personal description of minimalism sounds really great! Distractions are a pain for those who want to do a lot of things but has limited time. Of course, distractions come in different form and they differ depending on a person. Some may be able to work in the midst of a chaotic, messy and noisy place while others just can't move on with anything when they see something distracting.

Another explanation he gave on one of his YouTube videos was this line:

"Minimalism is not just about owning less stuff, its more about re-evaluating what you value. Developing a good filter."

What's Inside Kraig Adams' Nomadic and Minimalist Backpack?

I never thought everything that one needs can fit in in a backpack. Nonetheless, Kraig Adams showed and proved that he can survive with such little things.

However, note that although he has only a few things, at least to what most adults do, these are his most needed possession. Minimalism had indeed grown into his veins that he had live to this lifestyle for quite a while now.

To set the record, Kraig Adams travel a lot. Like literally a lot, as he has travel projects and clients, he is normally on the road. Also, he is a travel vlogger and Youtuber at the same time so it is given that he owns what most travel vloggers own as well.

45 Liter Backpack

First, his backpack is a 45 Liter type which has an outer sleeve which can easily be made open to give way to his one smaller camelback water backpack. The backpack was intended that way because it can fit a lot of things and can also just fit on an overhead storage in an airplane! Say goodbye to check-in bags or items!

Toilet and Bath Needs

He is very lucky he's a man, if he's a she then it would be a different story. Being a man has its own benefits, one of that is the fact that they keep a very little number of items for toiletries. With his clear containers, he can keep everything visible, his toothbrush which is foldable, his razor, soaps, and other stuff are kept organized in those clear containers.

Aside from that, he has an ultra-portable microfiber towel for drying off. This towel dries pretty fast and it includes a nice little bag.

Bottom to Top Wears

For his footwear, he carries an ultra-lightweight travel sandal for warm weather walks and for keeping feet clean and protected while taking showers in hostels, it folds up extremely small and compact. Then he usually has a single shoe too for walking, hiking and running. He got three socks too, thin ones.

Kraig Adams only got one pair of Do-In-Anything "DIA" shorts, three compression shorts which he uses as underwears, a pair of blue jeans with a belt and a single running shorts. For shirts, he has three pairs of Uniqlo AIRism black crewneck short-sleeve t-shirts. A black cap, a black hoodie for cold weathers, and one raincoat in case it rains.

Camera Essentials

As a filmmaker and YouTuber, the most essential thing for him is his camera gears. Being a traveler, it is hard to bring a lot of stuff while on the go so he had brought with him his favorite ones.

A Sony A7III camera for shooting photos and videos. It has great 4K image quality, battery life, full frame 120fps slow motion, fast AF for vlogging and low light sensitivity. It comes with a 16-35 Sony lens with 2.8 aperture.

Rode microphone for great audio especially when recording podcasts. A Joby rig and an ultralightweight tripod for shooting, a drone which is a Mavic 2 PRO with a Hasselblad lens and extra battery help a lot when traveling. Extra batteries, extra SD cards, and travel adapters too. Plus, a 2016 MacBook Pro with a mouse and thunderbolt and of course headphones.

Other Items

Additionally, he also keeps a sleep sheet which he uses to get protected from dirty hostel sheets, it includes a nice little carrying bag too!

TSA lock for locking his stuff when in a hotel, can opener, a single gel pen, and a small paper pad. The pair of sunglasses is also there to keep his eyes protected from the sun on a sunny day while running.

All of this stuff fit into his 45-liter backpack which is pretty cool! He usually washes his shirts and undies over a sink and they are pretty thin and dries quickly.

Being a nomad and a minimalist is surely challenging but as what Kraig Adams said, it is all about being intentional and filtering out those that won't help you with your productivity.

I am not sure if I can survive the same lifestyle but it is doable! Anyone who wants to live the same way, I salute you all. It might be fun to be that person, someone, too!

What do you think of minimalism and being nomadic?

New Toy: Canon SELPHY CP1300

One of my dream items at home was a Fujifilm Instax, you might ask why and my answer is why not? Kidding aside, I had longed for it ever since I was small. I remember back when I was still young, my cousin's friend gave her a Polaroid photo. I got super interested in it and was more curious that the photos come out right after taking the photo and its like magic, revealing the photo right there and then!

For a young girl, it was the coolest thing and I since then, I dreamed of having one. Now that I am in my midlife, I am a little sad I didn't have the chance to get a hand on one. I never had taken a photo with it or at least touch one.

Anyway, there's actually a reason behind why I didn't get to buy one although I can surely afford to get one if I wanted to. It all boils down to practicality. But after numerous printers, and getting disappointed with not getting the proper photo print results with those, we finally got ourselves a photo printer, a portable one and it's from Canon!

Introducing Canon SELPHY CP1300 Portable Photo Printer!

I love journals and if you have been following my blogs, I blogged about it several times.

Read related blogs:

Level up Your Journaling Skills

Why You Should Keep a Journal

One of the limitations I had encountered creating journal pages is the adding photos part. I badly want a polaroid photo on one of my journal pages but it felt like its an overkill because first, it has thick photo paper because of its instant magic photo-development property and second, it has thick bordering, this will cause my journals to have those page spaces due to the thick photos.

Then looking at the market, there are more options which can provide us with efficient and more practical uses as a printer which of course almost has the same price or maybe just a little bit higher. Which is why I had really never bought an Instax until now.

So, without further ado, allow me to introduce our new Canon SELPHY CP1300 Portable Photo Printer! It's quite a long name but that's how Canon named it.

Canon SELPHY CP1300 is a portable photo printer which is WIFI enabled which allows mobile phone and any other WIFI devices to connect to it and printing become as easy as a piece of cake! It a display and buttons in it which allows the users to easily navigate on its menus and options.

printer

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Although bigger in size compared to other portable printers, it was still the best option for us as it has bigger image options and of course I can surely edit the photos, add multiple images on one layout, print and cut them for my journal! Plus, James can also use it to print our travel photos, stick them on the wall, adore them all we want and perhaps send them as postcards too to some friends!

Unboxing Canon SELPHY

Video credits: Jean Beltran via YouTube

It was planned but not demanded, both James and I knew we need a photo printer but we also knew it was not an urgent need. And so we had just swept the idea under the rug until one day, we saw a post of a brand new Canon SELPHY CP1300, the latest one, not even used and was sold at Php 6,000. It's original price, however, is at Php 8995 so we both believe it was indeed the perfect time to get one, we are both suckers of anything that we can get discount but of course with the best item.

canon_printer

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

So last Friday, James came home with the Canon SELPHY CP1300 after the meetup with the seller who received it as a gift but didn't really think of using it, he's also based in Cebu so the transaction was pretty smooth.

What the box came with?

- SELPHY Printer
- Compact Power Adapter
- Power Cord
- Paper Cassette

Ink and paper are sold separately which I was surprised but nevertheless okay with it, I can't do anything about it though than just buy a set.

portable_printer_unbox

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Looking into the white printer, I followed the instructions with how to set it up, unfortunately, we have to wait for the paper and ink to really try it and print a sample one.

Canon SELPHY CP1300 Test Print

The box didn't come with any paper or ink so it has to be bought separately. A set of 108 photo papers and ink costs Php 1500, we bought it at the Canon store in SM Cebu.

Today, we did a test print and this was how it works:

Video credits: Jean Beltran via YouTube

The first step was to load the ink cassette. The printer has a compartment cover, the cassette gets into the compartment one way only to ensure that it won't be inserted incorrectly. Then close the cover.

Next was loading the paper cassette. It only gets into the printer one way so there were no issues with attaching it. Then the paper comes next. It can only accommodate a maximum number of 18 photo papers, it loaded with more than that, it will damage the printer or cause malfunction.

unboxing

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Third, turn on the printer. There are two options, either you use power cord or buy a separate battery so one can use it on the go. Upon turning on, a Canon logo will welcome each user and the option gets displayed. Navigation isn't an issue with its easy to touch buttons.

For the test, I used the WIFI capabilities of the printer while it works with SD cards too. It needs an application for it to communicate with the phone so I had to install the Canon Print application which is a free one. Once connected, it will show the options such as print a photo which was what I needed. I selected two photos and printed them.

photo_printer

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

Printing process took around four rounds, first was yellow, then red and the dark tones, then lastly the protective silk which will help the photo become waterproof.

The image quality looks good, although I feel like it differs a bit in the color it still looks stunning. I am quite excited to print more photos especially those that I will be adding to my journal.

My Overall First Impressions

canon_selphy_cp1300

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

It was cute and very nice, in my mind, I have a lot of plans on what to do and how to work with it but for now, I am just going to chill and edit more photos for it.

The only thing that I dislike though is the fact that it was actually doesn't have a touchscreen. I don't know why I had that impression but it turned out to be not a touchscreen at all. Anyway, I am still okay with it.

selphy_printer

Image credits: Jean Beltran via bitLanders Society Facebook

With a compact photo printer like this, I am totally encouraged to get back to my journaling habit. Our next trip will still be in Mindanao, we are going to Bukidnon and Cagayan De Oro so it would be a nice start to printing those travel shots!

Why I Switched to Washable Pads?

$

After almost a month of waiting, my orders finally arrived! Would you like to know what are these items? Here's a similar item to it:

Video credits: Melanie Czoka Simmons - A Prego Helping Pregos via YouTube

I was a fool of me to think that these will arrive in less than a week, I ordered it via Shopee.ph. My first few washable pads were purchased just in Cebu City from a local dealer and I found it very expensive thus, I looked for a seller on that eCommerce mobile app which offers the best price with the best review, you got to read the reviews, check the photos to ensure your money won't go to waste when purchasing from online shops!

Two months now, I had made a switch to use washable pads instead of the disposable type and it was one of the most liberating decisions that I have made in my life. There are many reasons behind that and I will deal with those in this blog together with the comparison to why I love these washable pads now and its PROs and CONs. It's quite a little embarrassing to talk about this but I got to share it because it will certainly help you ladies out there and the entire Mother Earth.

Read this related blog: Simple Ways to Minimize The Use of Plastics

In that blog I posted two months ago as well, I have shared my own simple ways of minimizing the use of plastics. I admit, it is quite very challenging but I am doing it one step at a time. I have missed a lot of times especially when it comes to plastic bags, I always tell myself to pursue and make it a habit to really refuse and minimize these items.

Why I Switched to Washable Pads?

Imagine, I was still ten years old at that time when I started bleeding and started using disposable pads because it was what my mother had advised me to do. I am 30 years old when I stopped using those disposable ones. It's a good two decades of usage. If I would compute the number of pads I had used from day one up to two months ago, it would be approximate of five thousand pads, but wait, that's only for when I am having my monthly visitor, the rest of the month, I use panty liners. So, at least 20 days a month, I use around two panty liners every day.

The Shocking Dangers of Disposable Pads

I never really thought that it is very dangerous but imagine every single lady like me uses a relatively the same number of these disposables, no wonder why our landfills are full now that these certain disposed ones have gone to the comfort of our oceans, to our beaches and worse, our animals.

Seeing sea creatures suffering because of our own doing was not a fun thing to watch. Animals who had died because of eating plastics. Plastics and disposables which were thrown by humans. So, I had made a choice to stop my contribution most especially in terms of my sanitary pads. I made a commitment and I am super happy I did.

That was the first reason, the second one was that disposable napkins are actually dangerous to our health. According to anigan.com:

Our pads are made of plastic materials. Some chemicals that are made to plastic like BPA and BPS can complicate embryonic development. The plasticizers can actually lead to organ damage and even cancer!

There are more other elements in it that would cause health issues, artificial fragrances, adhesives, and chemical gels. One or more of them as well can cause infertility because of the accommodated negative effects which definitely scares me and so I personally made a commitment to work on this.

It is indeed true that once we know the truth, it will set us free. So when I learned the truth behind these elements, it was time to do something about it.

The PROs of Using Washable Pads

Based on my own research and my personal experience, I have listed below the reason for the advantages of using the washable pads and liners.

Using Washable Pads Don't Have Any Side Effects on Our Bodies

Although it was my mother who had recommended that I use disposable pads when I started having monthly periods, it was also her who told me the story of how she uses cloths together with her sister when they were still young.

That story made me think of how the industry had indeed brainwashed our community. It has rooted deep that we are now trapped with it. Using cloths doesn't have any bad effects on our own bodies. Moreover, we have the discretion to make it even clean as to how we clean our clothes.

Altogether, from the two months of usage, I have realized that it has a psychological effect when I am using my washable pads rather than the disposables. It makes me feel like I am taking care more of my body and my habitat.

Using Washable Pads Are Safe to the Environment

Very importantly, our Earth has to be saved most especially in this age where the effects of plastics and our rubbage has significantly returned to us. But this damage is just too much that we need to be serious with our efforts.

For women out there, we must cut our own contribution to this and start minimizing or better yet eliminating our environmental impact.

Using Washable Pads Saves Money

What's the very great thing about using washable pads is the fact that you can save a lot of money. It is true that these pads may cause a bit when still starting because you'll have to buy several of them but over time, you'll surely save up.

The cost of a monthly sanitary pad usage for me would be around Php 50 for a single pack of 4-night pads, Php 60 for the day pads and Php 30 for a pack of liners. This accumulated for a year would cost me Php 1,680.

Compared to my washable pads which cost me Php 1,220 for 12 Bamboo charcoal regular Flow Cloth Menstrual pads and 12 Bamboo charcoal regular Flow Cloth Menstrual panty liners. This will be my pads for the next years. Imagine my own savings?

The CONs of Using Washable Pads

There are only two consequences that I think when I started using the washables, first is the truth that I will have to wash my pads which will cost me time. However, this is not too much of a work because once a system is created for washing, it becomes more efficient and easier to wash them.

The technique here is to use a soaking container to keep the pads, drain them every day while using a mild detergent and not using any bleaching.

Second is that there were times when I feel the plastic snap fastener. I say sometimes because there are times when I don't feel it, perhaps it is the wide size of the underwear too.

Video credits: Rachel Mirren via YouTube

Surprisingly, I have never had any leaks when using the cotton washable pads than when I had the disposables. I think it is because the new pads are very flexible. So far, I never regret switching. I am very happy with the washables and I am sticking to this for the rest of my life unless if I go to using the menstrual cups which I have no plans yet but there are reviews that state they are better than the reusable pads.

I am urging you guys to also try ditching out the disposables and give yourself a favor as well as our nature. It is time to do our part too,

The Price Tag of Getting Married

$
0
0

Today's blog is just a thought which I badly want to get into typing or writing, whatever it is called. I have been thinking about this for years, and I thought it is just right to post this today, the night before one of my friends say "I do".

Video credits: The School of Life via YouTube

Have you considered getting married? Yeah, no? What were you thinking when you decided to say yes to a proposal? Or better yet, what was going on your mind when you asked for that girl's hand and dropped the scariest yet also the most exciting question?

Well, perhaps a majority of the ladies out there would love to walk down the aisle, get themselves in a short movie focused with their pre-nuptial clips as well as that during the ceremony, that getting dressed and having their makeups on is such an achievement. Getting married is definitely a celebration worth reminiscing but to some, it could also be just a certificate for bondage.

Let's deal with how getting married these days is becoming a pain, both in the head, in the heart and in the pockets.

When We Were Younger...

marriage

At the time of this writing, my former colleague, a good friend will bid goodbye to singlehood. Its quite funny that out of the three of us, (three colleagues who had longtime relationships) James and I were the first to get married, Dhory and Carlo will tie the knot tomorrow while the longest of the three of us, Don and Tanya don't have plans yet so far.

As a background, I just want to share that the three of us, Dhory, Tanya and I were so close to our previous company, we belong to the same escalation team, we almost like the same things, travel, photography and fun while we also have different ideas and standing on certain things but we gel well. In fact, we always travel together to different parts of Cebu on our motorbikes together with our "then" boyfriends, take lots of pictures, we cook at our apartment, watch movies, talk about everything and we definitely felt like sisters.

But of course, all things in life has to come to an end, our friendship didn't end however, our time together had somehow drifted when we went on with each of our lives. I went to Dubai, Dhory went to Japan and Tanya went to Singapore. Although we were miles apart, we still did the same thing - went abroad, worked as overseas Filipino workers and this one is funny, left our boyfriends and had long distance relationships.

Getting Married...

Dhory, my friend, for sure is very excited, or perhaps excited is an understatement for that, what she feels could not be put into words and the same should be the case for Carlo. See, these two had been through a lot, they were like us, college-mates (Tanya and Don were too!) who became lovers. Just like other love stories, they had ups and downs. Perhaps the worst was breaking up twice or thrice? The last break up was a breather for the two of them. While it was Dhory who said quits, Carlo showed his ever-relentless love and finally, they were back to each others' arms.

Now, I bet Carlo is just ecstatic and won't be able to sleep well because of emotions, I wouldn't be surprised if he'd cry a river tomorrow. I love seeing tears and drama during weddings, who would not? It's great to see individuals uniting, committing to each other, promising eternal love and forever-ness if that's even a word.

"In a world full of "no forever", two individuals would prove the world otherwise."

But getting married is not an easy thing, even so not a cheap one to occur, it has its own price tag. It is true that this happens once in a lifetime, maybe some happen more than once but a majority of Filipinos do that only one time and most families, especially in this country, believe that it is worth all the spendings, after all, its a life's milestone.

Cost of Getting Married...

wedding_plan

I always hear couples getting into huge debt due to weddings. I read articles of parents who were unable to pay their dues, of married individuals who had to sacrifice a lot just so they can push the marriage, the ceremony and the fun reception afterward. Getting married is definitely wonderful but also costly.

First of all, getting married is not just a contract that one can use so to be legally correct with their romantic experience, it is actually sacred, a covenant filled with a commitment that no matter what, you'll choose to be with him or her for better or for worse. So it is indeed best to be fully committed before saying that "I do's" and tossing that money out for the ceremony.

Here are the things to consider and the estimated cost of getting married:

Wedding Planner or DIY?

wedding_preparations

Believe it or not, planning a wedding is a daunting task, there are things to consider, lots of people to get in contact with, you'll probably spend numerous weeks or months to get everything done. So it is something to consider, DIY which will save the two of you money or get a wedding planner which will cost some and there's also a risk included in it like getting scammed or anything similar.

Ceremony Venue or Location

Whether you want your wedding in a church or on a beach or garden, there are fees for it. Perhaps you'll be lucky or say blessed if you get free use of the church for the ceremony but certainly not free for a garden or beach resort unless you are the owner.

Wedding Dresses, Makeup, and Hair

cost_of_getting_married

Its another consideration to take, should you buy a brand new wedding dress? Maybe rent a whole set? Or reuse your mom's.

Are you going to do your own makeup and hair? Certainly not! The bride wants her hand to be relaxed and beautiful on her day so the looks and style have to be outsourced, this also comes with another set of price, think wise!

Wedding Invitations

It may be a simple paperwork but this doesn't mean it won't cost you. Design, edit, and print cost hundreds of bucks nowadays. But going digital is also a thing nowadays, consider it thoroughly.

Food, Cake, Caterers, Menu and Bar

cost_of_wedding

Do not forget the reception after the ceremony, one thing to really do weigh out is the number of people attending the wedding. There's a very bad Filipino habit of gatecrashing which is very inappropriate but is also very real so be ready with the surprise.

Florists, Entertainment and Staffing

The small details still cost, the DJ who'd be playing songs during the reception, the singers during the ceremony, the bands. Not to also forget the decoration both during and after the ceremony, the flowers.

You'd get someone to also arrange your entourage during the wedding proper. I know this is such a confusion during on set.

Transport

wedding_costs

Bridal car, or should you consider going unique and cool by riding a motorcycle on the way to the location? You don't want your bride's hair and makeup messed up before even reaching the altar.

Photo and Video

In this modern social media age, documentation is one of the "needs" of every celebration. Of course, you are getting married in a church or a beautiful garden, it is indeed a waste if no one's going to document that most special day of your lives so better yet, hire the best in town.

The best means also paying off more than Php 20,000 for the entire prenuptial and weddingceremony package. Possibly, that price is just the minimum, I am not quite sure how much is a grand package cost nowadays.

Video credits: WhatsUp Pinoy via YouTube

Consider A Simple, Solemn Civil Wedding?

I have thought of it again and again, should I go through the hassle just so I can be with the person I love the most? The two to five hours of ceremony and reception, will it matter after that wedding day?

Tying the know comes with a label, a price tag, consider it wisely. Don't let your emotions take over your decision-making while also still respecting that sacred covenant. There are options for the grand expenditures.

wedding_price_tag

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against grand weddings, I am just saying that if you can afford without breaking a bank, then go for it but if you will dive into a loan just to pursue it, making yourself poor because of this one-day event, think again. What happens after the wedding and the days to come is much more important.

Traditions and Customs of a Christian Filipino Wedding

Dhory marches her way into the aisle of Sacred Heart Parish in Cebu City while Carlo awaits at the end of the aisle, a little teary, his parents on his side and his best man who smiled at the sight of the bride.

Her face covered by her white veil, she held her pink colored flower bouquet as the bridal march music kept playing. The inspectors keep their curved smiles, the sight of happiness to see the bride passing by each of them towards her parents. The photographers were all in full clicks as they capture this bride moment.

All this happening in slow motion. I am fully inspired to write about weddings when I was witnessing the event. I could feel the emotions emerging and as the ceremony goes on, I felt it is a good blog to talk about: The Christian Wedding Traditions and Customs.

Weddings in the Philippines

The Philippines is dubbed as the only Christian country in Asia. Ninety percent are Christians but there are several sectors of the Christian community. However, when we talk about weddings, most Christian sectors do have similar ceremonial traditions and customs.

weddings

Although there had been several modifications or shall we say variations because of the influence of different culture, the basic elements of a Filipino wedding are still alive.

Why is that so? This is because, in a Christian wedding, Christ is the main center. The wedding ceremony reflects the way the couple commits to a how a family is designed by Christ. Every part of the ceremony has meaning and interpretation. Let's look into these things.

The Christian Wedding Traditions and Customs

Parental Proposal

traditions

But way before the wedding, traditions already come into play. Marriage proposals as what we call as "Pamanhikan" or the parental proposal where the man and his family comes to the bride's home bringing food and asks for the woman's family's consent on the matter.

Once the parents and the entire family approves, they can then talk about everything about the wedding, finances, roles, date, and others. On the wedding day, these are the traditions and customs.

Bride's Wedding Dress

wedding_traditions

White is a sign of purity. It has been designed that the bride is pure before the wedding. The veil is there as a sign that the bride is modest, this also claims to keep the bride safe from the evil elements.

It is a belief in the country that if a bride fits her wedding dress before the wedding, there's a huge possibility that the wedding will not pursue. So most brides would just wear it on the wedding day.

Separation Before Union

filipino_wedding

It is a custom for both the soon bride and groom to be are separated before the wedding day. It means enjoying their time being single together with their family.

This continues up to the church where the groom arrives an hour before the ceremony basically to welcome guests and entertain their families who start arriving at the church. Usually, the groom stands just at the church door as he greets the guests. But there's a greater meaning about this, the groom arrives early and awaits the bride as a sign of how Christ has been our covenant initiator.

As the ceremony starts, the bride gets out of the car and takes her time for the bridal march. This will be the only time that the groom sees the bride once again.

Sponsors

There's a belief that the couple needs guidance and support in their new venture so the sponsors are there to assist them in their relationship, pray for them and provide them Christian-based advises and support them may it be in counseling or even to the point of the finances.

Individuals who are selected as their sponsors become a huge part of their lives, they don't just appear to be witnesses during the event but they are considered as their godparents too.

Ritual Objects

weddings_in_the_philippines

During the Filipino wedding ceremony, there are certain ritual objects which has important symbols as the couple starts their married lives.

Unity coins - Pieces of either gold or silver coins wrapped in a bag symbolize that the groom can support and look after his wife. More importantly, it is a sign of good luck.

Candles - Two candles stand beside the groom and the bride while a bigger candle is at the center. During the ceremony, these two smaller candles stay lit and the center candle will be lit up by both the groom and the bride.

This is a symbol of coming together for both parties, uniting themselves and giving their light to Christ who is the center of their marriage.

However, there's also another belief that if ever one of the candles go out during the ceremony, it can be understood that the individual dies before the other.

Video credits: Philippe Kahn via YouTube

Veil and Cord - The veil and cord have a huge part of the unifying of the two bodies. The bride and groom are now being tied together. The veil embodies that they are now one together in holy matrimony.

On the other hand, the cord which has a shape form of number 8 can be illustrated for infinity. That they are bound together for infinity, for forever. The cord loops are placed into each other to the everlasting fidelity of the couple, the Christian family has been designed that way by Christ, to become one until death do they part.

filipino_wedding_traditions

Bible and Wedding Rings -Wedding Rings are their sign of love and faithfulness. When a person has a ring in his hand, it means he or she has already committed her life to someone, in short, he or she is already married, fully submitted and devoted to his or her partner.

The Bible as well is not just a symbol but a necessary item for the couple's marriage to be focused and guided by the love of Christ who had unified them.

After Wedding Ceremony Customs

wedding_traditions_in_the_philippines

There are four important events that should occur after the wedding ceremony at the church.

Releasing of Doves - Two white doves specifically are released by the couple as a sign of harmony and peace. These doves can be caught by any of the participants of the wedding and can be kept with them too.

Cake and Wine - The couple will then share their sweet and bitter experiences in life. The cake stands for the sweet ones while the wine for the bitter. It makes their wedding theory vows for better or for worse into action.

filipino_weddings

Money Dance - As help for the couple to get their marriage life started, they'll have the dance floor, a slow dance to give the guests, and their sponsors time to pin their monetary gifts into each couple. The pinned envelopes or even real money will be kept by the maid of honor.

Opening of Gifts - Tradition has it that the couple selects the biggest and the smallest gifts. They will be opening the gifts in front of everyone.

Final Note

There might be weird traditions listed here and some of you might feel like some are not necessary but that's how the Filipino traditional wedding usually happens. If you get invited to a Filipino wedding, expect any of the above list to happen one way or another.

Let me know your thoughts, also share your traditions and customs during weddings too!

I Ate A Flower at The Buzz Cafe - Robinsons Galleria Cebu

You read the title and would say this girl might be crazy eating flowers! But this is definitely true, let me tell you the story. Today's blog is a normal day diary-type entry which talks about how my Sunday went.

The previous blogs I had posted here talks more of what I had observed in my environment and the events that had happened so I thought I should also continue with that trend while I still can't find another blog topic to talk about.

Sunday Morning Church

We parked our motorcycle beside the delivery vehicle at Northdrive Mall along Ouano Avenue in Mandaue City. Looking at my phone, it told me we were ten minutes late for the service. Traffic was already building up early today although it was a Sunday so it somehow caused this, I am not giving out excuses, it was just the truth.

As soon as we got inside using the right wing hallway, we positioned ourselves at an empty line of seats, in the middle to be specific, and joined our hearts to the praise and worship service. This is definitely my favorite part of a service because I am always blessed with the worship but sometimes, the preaching part differs depending on the messenger.

After Service

I liked the message and it was almost eleven in the morning when the service ended. The Northdrive Mall has good geometric areas which James and I felt a good spot to take some sample shots, yes we brought our cameras with us because we have an event to attend to in the afternoon.

Let me show you some sample of the pictures James took:

Lunch at The Buzz Cafe Robinsons Galleria

It didn't take a while for us to reach Robinsons Galleria, this is just ten minutes drive away from Northdrive Mall. This is my favorite mall because it doesn't have that many people compared to the rest of the malls in the city plus its parking area is super cozy.

As soon as we got inside the parking area, I could sense the temperature drop, as if they had allowed the air conditioning system to also get to the parking area.

At the mall's center section was an active event for Table Tennis, I could see athletes, men, and women, young and adult ones, all competing for some tournament, I believe it was just a one-day event.

My stomach specifically was already demanding for food, I could literally hear it grumble, screaming for food so I had to stop watching the event and start looking for food. I couldn't think of any other satisfying restaurant to have lunch than The Buzz Cafe.

The Buzz Cafe

Not just because The Buzz Cafeis owned by a Boholana but it got great food and a good ambiance too, not to mention that their service is also superb, with staffs who are accommodating and initiative. It is not a surprise that they had opened several other cafes and booths all around the Bohol island as well as in Cebu City.

Aside from that, they take pride in using their own production of organic ingredients for their food options. In fact, they also have their own farm in Bohol called Bohol Bee Farm and one of my favorite products from their farm is their Molave Honey.

Going back to the restaurant, James and I passed by their ice cream booth, Moringa is my own favorite flavor before when I was still not very conscious of the food I take into my body. Now that I am very careful, I refuse eating ice cream or anything with too much sugar in it.

Pushing through the heavy and wide glass door opened its way for us to get to the main restaurant. The short chairs at the entrance area with colorful seat covers as well the family tables were all occupied, a staff showed us our way to the second room which was adjacent to the main dining area. It only has one table occupied so we were fine with sitting at the first table on the left.

The chair was made of wood, looked like reclaimed one or designed to have that look, it bears a flower designed wood carving which was painted in yellow and green leaves. The seat has a weaved pattern, of local leaves which reminded me of our very own "banig" or local mat.

The Buzz Cafe Food / Meal Set Selections

Before I could grab my camera out, the staff handed us a copy of their menu, thick, one-piece boards have the options printed in it. The third menu has their three meal seats worth Php 260 each which I believe is the best option because it has already all in it, a vegetable salad, protein like fish or chicken, a healthy looking Bohol Red Rice mixed with sweet steamed Cassave pieces and lastly a Citronella Juice.

Not to also mention that The Buzz Cafe provides a complimentary meal too! A sample Cab-cab and their organic Squash Bread with pesto and mango spread which are all yummy!

I ordered sets B and C. This has a little variation like the pork viand which is included in Set B for James while I was alright with my flower salad, chicken, grilled fish, and juice.

Obviously, I had no complaints regarding the food on our plates. Because as usual, it exceeds my expectation. The Cassava slices were really sweet and it compliments the Red Rice. The fish and the chicken are all good too plus the best part was the flower salad. I was even encouraged to blog before eating because my tummies and eyes were all happy seeing the served food.

It is pretty evident that both my husband and I love The Buzz Cafe. Truly, we recommend this restaurant. I love as well that all of the staffs here are from Bohol, the owner had pledged to provide livelihood to her fellowmen. The Buzz Cafe also supports the environment by not using any plastic straws or utensils.

Planerds Event

But our main purpose of going to Robinsons Galleria was not really to dine at The Buzz Cafe, instead, we had planned on joining the Planerds Meetup where someone will speak about planners and how to correctly start jotting on one's planner.

Unfortunately, when we arrived at the spot, at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Robinsons Galleria, we couldn't locate the group or any individuals associated with the event. After waiting for a few minutes, we decided that we just go shopping and go home afterward.

Video credits: Annie Smith via YouTube

That ended my day outside the house. How about you? How was your Sunday?

Why We Should Start Making Our Ecobricks?

plastics

Throughout my travels for the past years, I have never gone to a place in my country, the Philippines which don't use plastics in their daily lives. More often, I have seen mountains of these non-biodegradable materials being left to decay, or so I thought.

Plastics obviously live even after making use of it for a while. The problem with plastic is that the human race had been very accustomed to using it, it became part of our lives and now we are trapped to its usage and it seems there's no way out. While we can do the least of things like having a day where plastics are banned from being used or perhaps embracing the life without plastics or even so joining groups who are fighting against it.

However, the works such a small portion of the population in a community or a county can only do little for truly saving nature. We need a collaborative work, we need each other to do our corresponding job to minimize the use of plastic and perhaps lessening the plastic issue, at least.

In this blog, I would like to talk about Ecobricks, one of the solutions to plastic together with the reasons why each one of us has to start embracing it.

What are Ecobricks?

ecobrick

According to their site, ecobricks.org,

"An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed to a set density with used, clean and dry plastic to achieve a building block that can be used over and over again."

Video credits: Ecobrick via Youtube

If you had watched the video above, it summarizes how plastics had been polluting the Earth. It is true that plastics had been very useful to us, humans. It made our lifestyle easy and convenient, however, because plastics do not decompose or biodegrade, they stay on the Earth's surface for hundreds or thousands of years.

Each plastic burnt, thrown or dumped causes several negative impacts on nature and even to us, humans as it is the main contributor to pollution, diseases over trash and rubbish as well as animal and plants problems being one of the reasons of our health issues in this generation. There are research studies that show plastics being present in our water, in our food and which reaches us and thus causing hormonal imbalance, infections, and worse cancers.

How to Make Ecobricks?

green_furniture

True enough, plastics are useful for our lives' convenience but because it was conceptualized with the absence of how to ending its life, it had now become the top problem.

Ecobricks is a simple solution that requires more and more hands in order for it to have a relevant impact on our environment. It needs you and me to do our own part.

It doesn't take a lot of brains to create ecobricks, but it has specific guidelines just to ensure that the ecobrick is within standard making sure that it will last long which can be reused again and again. Here below are the steps in creating one.

Step 1. Prepare the Ecobrickale Plastics

how_to_create_ecobricks

While there are so many plastic types, for making ecobricks, the common and most advisable types are styrofoam, plastic bags, plastic packaging, straws, and cellophane.

Part of the preparation is to clean them. It is important that these plastic items are clean and dry because dirt in these plastics will cause contamination inside the brick and will eventually cause bloating and popping off the bottle.

Step 2. Get Your Bottle

making_ecobricks

Obviously, ecobricks are created with the use of bottles. But it requires that the bottles should be of the same size, same brand and of which is very available in the community.

As you can see, creating ecobricks requires more than one people for it to become successful or at least to make certain green furniture. But it is also possible for one to make it on their own, it would just take time.

So, always consider what are the most common or highly available types of bottles within the community. Uniformity of the size and type is very essential.

Step 3. Pick a Stick

plastic_ecobricks

Ecobrick is a bottle packed and filled with dense plastics with the use of a packing stick. Usually and what's being recommended is to use bamboo sticks.

But any stick is actually okay as long as it is not pointed which might cause any scratch or worse erupt he bottle.

Step 4. Push and Pack Plastics

how_to_make_ecobricks

With plastics, bottles and a stick, one is ready to start pushing on the plastics into the bottle. There's a certain technique in doing this. It is a good habit to use light colored ones in the bottom because they are usually what's going to show when using the ecobricks.

Big pieces of plastics can be cut into smaller ones to make it easier to push them into the bottle. Making sure that the plastics are not pushing through the lid or overflowing otherwise, it may cause the bottle damage.

Video credits: Ecrobricks via YouTube

That's the most basic way of making an ecobrick.

Why We Should Start Embracing Ecobricks?

1. Because Everyone Can Make It

ecobricks_uses

There are no special talents or capabilities in creating an ecobrick. It can be made by everyone too who has hands and a heart that feels for the environment.

More importantly, it doesn't require any types of machinery or special materials to create it.

2. Because We Can Contribute to Lessening Plastic Waste

Because of too many plastics around the world, it is important to make use of them to help nature and be a contributor of good cause.

With creating ecobricks comes also the heart to be a part of the bigger picture. It encourages each ecobrick maker to have the compassion for nature.

3. Because We Can Certainly Create Green Materials Out of It

ecobricks_advantages

More importantly, the green materials which can be created out of these plastics are useful to several institutions and even to communities like schools, local government units and a lot more.

Ecobricks can be turned into garden raised beds, chairs, tables, walls, and even a whole new house! Isn't it amazing?

It doesn't take a lot of time to start becoming an ecobrick maker. It just needs preparation and dedication. I personally will start making my own ecobrick soon. I have decided to be a part of this cause and be use my hands for the benefit of the Earth and the living creatures below and above it.

Why I Don't Skip Ads When Watching This YouTube Channel?

What do you feel when seeing a button on a YouTubethat states skip ad? Who among us here would often click that Skip Ad button when watching videos? Most especially if we are a fan of that YouTube channel? I do.

But it is quite different when I am watching this certain YouTube channel. I will talk about him later on. Today's blog is another YouTuber feature and this or he will surely touch your hearts just like mine and will hopefully, you won't skip ads too when watching his YouTube videos.

Introducing Grandpa Kitchen

india

Image credits: Grandpa Kitchen's Facebook page

"Dadaji" is an Indian term for paternal grandfather. In YouTube, a channel is named Grandpa Kitchen and its story revolves around a certain Dadaji who refers to himself as the grandpa who cooks tons of food servings which he, later on, feeds to orphan kids.

Based in India, it is evident that there are kids who had never tried any lavish food like pizzas and pastries. Grandpa Kitchen would then be cooking these types of food from scratch and feed them to the orphans.

youtube

Currently, the channel had reached three million subscribers from all over the world. There have been speculations as to its credibilities but the channel continues to show the goodness out of the heart of this 70-plus-year-old grandpa.

The Grandpa Kitchen Proceeds

youtube_videos

Reading on several comments and feedback on certain forums had me also thinking on why the videos are shoot in such a way. See, YouTubers gain lots of money from millions of views and with the number of subscribers Granpa Kitchen has, it is evident that he must have already gained thousands of dollars, or yet, the account holder is now already a millionaire in India.

Although there are discouraging comments, I have stayed with Grandpa Kitchen because I believe in the heart of those who had started this channel. According to their Facebook fan page, they are entertaining, educating people by cooking food and they donate the proceeds to charity. Their main goal is to provide basic necessities like food, clothing, school supplies and birthday gifts to the orphans.

Why I Watch Grandpa Kitchen?

youtube_channel

I can't remember the exact day that I had subscribed to Grandpa Kitchen but I am pretty sure it was the end of 2017 when I found one of his videos in the suggested video section. I got pretty curious, it was about cooking Biryani. At that time, I was missing some biryani dishes because when I was in Dubai a few years back, it was that food that my friend and I would go to each time we receive our pay. It's like a celebration!

Upon watching Grandpa, I got really inspired by the effort he and his team does from cooking the meals from scratch up to the end of serving them to the orphan kids.

Video credits: Grandpa Kitchen via YouTube

But more importantly, the following are the main four reasons why I continue to watch Grandpa Kitchen with the sole YouTube channel that I just allow the ads to continue playing.

I Learn More About Indian Culture by Their Cooking Style

cooking_show

The Indian and Filipino cooking style looks pretty similar in his videos. During "fiestas" or "kumbira" as for how we refer it in the Visayas region, this is the time where huge servings of food are cooked and prepared before guests from different places start arriving for either lunch or dinner.

Grandpa Kitchen also prepares and cook his recipes outside, in a scenic place where nature is at close. The filmmaker would usually feature those live animals around and the scenes in the environment where they are cooking.

grandpa_kitchen

What I really notice is that Indians definitely love spices and chilis. There was a certain recipe where Grandpa had added chili flakes, chili powder, and full chilis into his mixture. These were for kids and I already thought they might not be able to eat it well because it's too spicy but at the end of the video when these kids were already eating them, they didn't look like the food was spicy at all. If that was me, I might have asked for lots of water so I can swallow the food.

More importantly, watching the cooking show is also a learning process for cooking certain food. Baking is totally possible without the use of an oven or other electrical machines.

Watching the Cooking Process is Therapeutic

grandpa_kitchen_youtube

I guess its just me, but when I am watching Grandpa Kitchen's cooking from scratch, like literally from the assembling of the fireplace to the cutting of the ingredients and preparing the cooking materials, he mans it together with the team of two or three men.

Grandpa doesn't use any special tools too or cooking electronics in cooking. It reminds me of my grandmother and grandfather who used to cook local Filipino foods before when they were still alive. So it is obvious how tedious the work is.

youtube_ads

And for that specific reasons, I find it very relaxing to see the actual and raw way of cooking. The video coverage as well is not extravagant that I can hear the sound of the environment and nature around. The sound of plates, knives and other materials during the cooking process for me is therapeutic.

Grandpa Kitchen's is Inspiring

youtube_grandpa_kitchen

I always have a soft heart for the elderly not just because they remind me of my grandparents but because seeing them makes me also think of their experiences in life. Try talking to the elderly and you'll learn a lot about life and how it was living during their prime years.

Watching the lines on the grandpa's face, the hands which show hard labor and his smile at the start of the video, as well as his way of stating the ingredients, send an inspiring melody.

Grandpa usually starts the video by stating their mantra: "Caring, sharing, loving. This is my family". Then he smiles and chuckles after that part. Every now and then, he shows a happy face and laughs too while waiting for the food to be cooked.

Also, seeing the happy faces of these orphan kids is definitely satisfying and fulfilling at the same time. With this, I also become inspired by also sharing with the kids in my neighborhood. By December this year, I will also host something similar to Grandpa Kitchen's videos where James and I will cook food and give gives to the children during Christmas.

Every View Helps

And because Grandpa Kitchen is inspiring, it is the sole YouTube channel which I had allowed ads to continue playing until the end of the video. The channel's videos mostly contain an advertisement at the start of the video, in the middle part and the end, sometimes it has four video advertisements in between and I don't mind letting it play because I am pretty sure the views are important and I am helping in a way for Grandpa to continue his charitable works.

Currently, I guess the video which Grandpa Kitchen has the most views is the Chicken Pizza Cooking for 100 Kids Orphans because it now has 15M and counting views.

Since I started bitLanders, I had been exposed as well to cryptocurrency. It was a dismay when the site stopped paying in BTC though and it is a rejoicing moment when they had announced that they'll be re-enabling BTC payment soon. With that, everyone has been anticipating the comeback. Everyone's asking when would that glorious day? Is it happening very soon? Or is it still a plan that has a tendency of being just a plan, unrealized and will just break our hopeful hearts.

Anyway, due to the fact that Bitcoin value has hiked over the past few years, this has exponentially made cryptocurrency a hit most especially to the millennials. Would you consider yourself a millennial? I do.

The millennials are the young adult generation of the 21st century. Through the use of computers, tablets, cell phones and all other types of numerous digital gadgets available to almost everyone, as well as the availability of the internet, investing money, time and efforts in cryptocurrency are becoming one of the tops if not the top choice of the Y generation.

Speaking of cryptocurrency, let me share to you some of the few applications and websites which I had been spending time lately. There are three new ones which I had been using for just less than a week and so far, since I can manage using them, I had thought of sharing them to you as well just in case you want to earn more cryptocurrencies which have potentials in gaining value soon.

1. Pivot Application

My brother shared this application, the same brother who had referred bitLanders to me and the other social media apps which are powered by cryptocurrency. As it is from him, I immediately signed up not really fully understanding what the app is all about. I just trusted him.

What is Pivot?

Statement from Pivot's site shows:

Pivot is a community from China for cryptocurrency investors. Its Chinese version is well operated. We provide cryptocurrency markets, prices, and charts in real time of more than 1400 cryptocurrencies and the freshest blockchain news.

In short, it is Reddit+Coindesk.

It looked very legit because of the investors backing up the said application. From Binance to Huobi and other huge names, this application is surely going miles in the future.

But the best thing about it is that it pays the users in BTC too aside from receiving PVT or the Pivot's coins.

In order to earn BTC, a user has to complete specific daily tasks. It is a little similar to bitLanders because of the daily task and daily rewards in it. A blog shared can be read and the user has to claim the read power points. Every single time the user gets someone to sign up in the app under his or her referral link earns the referrer 10k power points and a certain percentage of the user's earning will also carry over to the referrer.

It looked pretty simple and straightforward. All those which are shared in different social media will automatically point to the person who had shared the reading link.

Currently, after less than a week, I was already able to cash out, just a test one of 0.0009 BTC, there's a fee of 0.0002 so I will just receive 0.0007 BTC in my wallet but it is still two days since I processed that, I can't wait for it to arrive in my wallet.

2. Lit Application

If you are a fan of Facebook and Instagram stories, this app is for you. Before, I had no interest in those stories until I came to know this application. Referred by my bitLanders friends, I came to download the app and found having fun with sharing my daily stories like photos and videos!

What is LIT?

Still, in its Beta version, Lit is introduced by Mithril, the cryptocurrency that each user receives in Lit.

Users could share their stories via Lit Stories, and be rewarded with Mithril tokens based on their stories impact and influence across the network.

So far, it requires only 24 maximum photos which stay in the user's profile timeline for a few hours, I believe it stays for 24 hours too. Each user can share their life dynamics and then get the corresponding Mithril coins based on their community influence.

In my five days of usage, I had earned three point something Mithril and the current value of one Mithril is at $0.30 as per coinmarketcap.com.

The app doesn't have any referral links available so if you are using this application, please do follow me and let's connect at @junebride.

3. Weku

At first, when a friend introduced Weku to me, I was totally shocked because it literally looks like Steemit. You already know what Steemit is, it is backed by the Steem blockchain and has been doing well since the end part of last year until the first quarter of this year. Although its value has decreased significantly, their front line interfaces and apps are still on a roll.

lit_mithril

Then came Weku, I personally thought it was a parody version of Steemit. I asked if this is just a copycat and wasn't something very serious. However, upon knowing that there are Steemit friends and communities who are also active there, I signed up.

What's in Weku?

According to their main Weku site:

WeKu's mission is to create a new, fully decentralized generation of social open platforms based on blockchain technology and utilizing the InterPlanetary

Well if you are already in Steemit, it is pretty similar, I mean ultimately similar. From the interface to its editor up to the wallet, you'll easily get along.

Weku pays just like Steemit, with Weku tokens of which are tradeable and can be transferred anywhere at any time. And Weku Dollars (WKD), but these don't have any values yet as of the meantime. These can be earned by blogging, each upvote will accumulate the points and will come as rewards after a couple of days.

The reason why I am also there is that my friends are there. I have a good number of friends in bitLanders who are also Steemit users and Weku users too, I want to still be involved in the same network as they are.

Currently, their front end is only intended for blogging. If you consider posting your thoughts and events in life, you may check on Weku too!

With the rise of cryptocurrency, knowing the hundreds if not millions of cryptos popping out here and there, it is pretty possible that one will get confused about which one to really invest their time on.

crytocurrency_apps

I consider myself a newbie in the cryptocurrency world and I am just learning how this works too. It is just a bit of a good thing that I am earning a few dollars of these coin value while it is still in its low. Imagine when these coins reach their peak? Just like when we had BTC before, never in our wildest dream that it will reach such value.

So stuck up on your coins and let's just hope for the best!

Today's generation has an addiction to electronics, digital stories, and even social media. There are hundreds if not thousands of social media platforms all over the web. You'll find them anywhere, on the web, in the mobile phones, in tablets and desktop applications. They send notifications, they allow connections and more.

It is evident that wherever we may be, socializing is a part of life. No man is an island as the cliche quote says and thus, that became the social media craze everyone who is on the internet is a part of. You and I, and all of those who are bending down into their phones, eyes wide opened and turned into that light-emitting screen.

Aside from the birth of these social media sites and platforms, comes the evolution of them all. Facebook was not that same when we started using it a decade ago. It had evolved into its different forms from timelines to friends suggestions and a lot more. Included on that is the birth of stories. Instagram and Facebook have it. Today's blog will all be about the beauty of these Social Media stories. Let's delve into what this is about and how to start using it.

Presenting Instagram and Facebook Stories!

Except if you are in China, you must have known these two social media platforms: Facebook and Instagram. Instagram being owned now by Facebook has been rolling out some features which are also available in the latter's application, this includes Stories.

According to bufferapp.com

Stories are short user-generated photo and video collections that can be viewed up to two times and disappear after 24 hours.

And while a lot of negative commentary about how they are able to make use of posting short media collections only for them to disappear after a day isn't very encouraging, there are still a lot of users all over the world who are into it. Most of them are those influencers and even the commoners.

More importantly, there's always a negative and a positive side of the coin. Just be sure to commit into the positive one.

Where to Find Stories?

On your mobile devices, these stories appear at the top of the application. They are in circular forms and will be updated every time a new story is posted. There's no limit to adding stories though which is cool but having too many bars that play around for some time may become a little boring unless you post really quality and interesting content.

Stories can be viewed twice as a maximum per user and will then disappear after a day. There are other inclusions now when posting stories such as adding filters just like how the original maker Snapchatdid it as well as adding links and surveys or questions where the viewers can participate.

From being a text-based era, this current generation had become media-based and texts are used now to only support the media that is being presented like adding a little title or description to point viewers on what to do next.

How to Create Stories?

It is very easy to post one. If you are a long time Facebook or Instagram user, this comes very familiarly to you and you might also have been posting constantly.

For the benefit of those who had never tried it, here's how!

On either the Facebook's mobile application, swipe right to launch the built-in camera that has the options available such as filters as well which is far more options compared to Instagram, certain films had partnered with Facebook too to incorporate their movie into social media.

While on Instagram, tap the camera icon on the top left-hand side of the application. This includes the availability of posting simple texts, live, the normal video or photo, a boomerang which is also a cool feature, superzoom which is fun, focus, rewind which plays videos in reverse and finally hands-free. But also, one can add filters which sometimes are a little scary and fun at the same time.

How Stories Help Promote Business?

More than just for personal advantage, businesses are also getting into Instagram Stories. With the significantly hike in terms of usage and embraces for Stories, more and more businesses had delve into the said function, making their brands more known to the new generation and influence the other ones to also be involved into this new marketing strategy.

Why is Instagram Stories crucial in increasing market audience? There are certain reasons and I would like to talk about just three.

1. Take Advantage of the 24 Hours Duration

Because posts can only last for a day, posted videos or photo contents can be informal. While most marketing videos are very well thought of because these can be shared, can be viewed several times and can even be archived for the future, with Stories, it can't be except if you keep a copy of it in your archive section.

Going back to our first point, the 24-hour duration may be a short time, it can also be used to stimulate the audience, make experiments and take advantage of what your audience is looking into.

Businesses can post behind the scenes of a product made, the simple functionalities that are okay to be shared can be posted in a little preview. These small clips and photos will give a business brand a hint on what your audiences are really looking into your business.

2. Communicate With Your Audience

Consumers, that's you and I are humans that want to be handled by business in a more personal way. There are several businesses out there that had somehow lost their customers because they just don't feel that they are being heard of.

With Stories, a brand can surely post little talks, some updates, hello's and certain greetings to their customers. Perhaps if there updates, adding links on Stories will provide more information to the consumers.

Activity and constant updates will ensure the audience that your business is always eager to provide the latest happenings about the product.

The Instagram Business Analytics will surely be helpful!

3. A Venture to Increase Viewers and Following

With Instagram's new Stories feed algorithm, that is how the stories are being shown in a certain user's feed or when they are searching for tags or locations or even just keywords, even those who are not following your business on the said platform can actually view your postings.

All mix of fun promotional contents on your business stories will be a huge boost to your business model. In fact, all options to really promote your business should be used most especially that in this generation, people are now turning away from the old television, magazine type of promoting brands to the online and digital avenue.

Businesses must also keep up and get themselves involved in this era.

That's it! Had you tried using the Instagram or Facebook Stories? Let me know your personal experience!
